This is my first post, so hello everyone. My A15 is due for a new rear tire, and I am looking for something a little more street oriented. I have read many good things about the Metzler Tourance and Michelin T66, but also a little turned off by the prices. I would just like some fresh opinions on the subject because I know you know a lot more than me. Recommendations of other tires and also where to get them would be fantastic. Thank you

Dunlop D607 is another street-oriented tire, runs a little cheaper than the Tourance, has good rep as a street tire. Utterly useless anywhere other than pavement, of course. Most of the "budget" tires are aimed at more dirt-oriented riders, but the Kings KT-967 appears to be more street-oriented and much cheaper than the Metzelers. But not that much cheaper than the Dunlop D607. $56 for the KT967 rear at motorcycle-superstore.com, $86 for the Dunlop at swmototires.com, I suspect the Dunlop will last twice as long as the Kings as well as be a better street tire since it has a completely street-oriented tread pattern while the KT-967 looks like it still has pretensions of dual-sportness. Really, given your criteria, the D607 looks like a darn good match. Note, hwoever, that I've never run D607's, frankly putting a pure street tire on a KLR seems to me a bit like putting a dress on a pig -- sure, you can do it, but wouldn't that dress look better on something NOT a pig?! -E

But Eric, some folks like pigs. In fact they think pigs are the most beautiful thing. What could be better than to dress up the "most beautiful thing"? May I ask, why would anyone WASH their KLR? They probably have dresses on their pigs too.Of course, the boys would have pants.

I've been running a set of D604's which the 607's replaced for the last two years, and almost 10,000 mostly street miles. I love these tires for what I do. Most of my riding is a daily commute over 10 miles of smooth highway, 5-6 miles of city streets, and usually around 4 miles of construction. I also use them on the hard-packed sand beaches of Galveston and Freeport Texas with no problems at all. I've used them on almost everything but mud and they work well. I would put a pure street tire on my KLR if I were to take a longer freeway trip, as the KLR is my only bike and must do anything and everything. I think it would be cheaper to put street tires on it than to buy a street-only bike. Anyway, best of luck, the people on here have tried everything and give the best advice of just about any group. If you have heavy-duty tubes in the tires, they'll last 3 or 4 tire changes before I would suggest changing them just be safe. If you have regular tubes, buy heavy-duty tubes from Fred or Happy Trails or Dual Star or from your local store, and set your old tubes aside to be turned into rubber bushings and other such interesting stuff. _E
