klr gas milage

At 259 miles, I hit reserve on my IMS tank. It took exactly 6.0 gallons of
gas to fill it back up. Figure I had at least half a gallon of reserve,
and then the "hidden reserve". I don't think my KLR would make 300 miles
on a tank of gas, but 250+ miles is still further than I'd want to ride in
one go anyhow.
Yes, 43mpg sucks for a KLR. But that's on what laughingly is referred to
as "gasoline" here in California, and is either stop-and-go traffic on
surface streets (and the wrist of my throttle hand gets a *lot* of
exercise, I don't hang around for cars to rear-end me!) or 80+mph
(indicated) on the freeway, mostly while shoving tank panniers and side
bags through the air in full burro mode loaded down with the booty from my
latest shopping spree. From a mechanical point of view everything's fine
with my KLR (clean air filter, fresh spark plug, all valves in middle of
their adjustment except for front left that is approaching too tight but
not there yet). The plug looks fine. Power is fine -- when I can shove all
that frontal area down the freeway at an indicated 90mph, there's nothing
wrong power-wise. Oil is fine -- Rotella 5W40 synthetic, changed
regularly. Dunno, what do other California KLR riders get, MPG-wise?
I still wonder about those folks who claim to get 55mpg+ (U.S. gallons) on
a KLR. Do they ride at 55mph with no luggage on the bike other than their
gut? Or is gas outside of California really that much better?

Hiway loaded with a tent, pack and myself I was getting about 42~45 mpg running kinda hard, trail riding and a few miles of Forest hiway it climbed to about 45ish, return trip was closer to 50 mpg but we were running a moderate speed 65ish indicated, this is using 14/43 gearing, knobby tires. Normal for me is about 40 mpg, never really tracked it, just happened to check this past trip after filling up few times. Dooden A15 Green Ape> gut? FYI I'm getting almost exactly 45 mpg here in Wisconsin. About 80% of my riding is at 70 mph on an interstate. Also, I weigh 215 and everything on A-11 is stock.
I've also noticed mileage goes down to about 40 mpg in temperatures below 45 degrees. The only days I don't ride is when there's a layer of snow or ice on the pavement.

Hey Eric I get between 46 to 48 miles per gallon on my A19. Mostly
46 with my driving habits. I drive in alot of stop and go traffic
and alot of run and gun from light to light here in Houston. This
is riding with a loaded Kawa tank bag and just me, I am 6'2" and 230
lbs. I usually hit 210 miles before I hit reserve on my stocker tank.

Ditto on my A-11. I hit reserve at anywhere between 205 to 217. I almost always stop for a fill-up after I turn-on the reserve. The tank then holds about 4.75 to 4.85 gallons.

I am in IL, and I get 55 + mpg. I don't ride real hard and don't carry anything but my 265 lbs body. I seldom rev over 5,000 rpm. (I usually shift about 3,500). I find the KLR to be one of the best theraputic rides I have ever had. Plugging along about 45 on a scenic gravel or dirt road is heavenly. I have had some spirited fun on different occassions and have gotten down to 52 mpg on one tank.

When I get on the open rode I run an indicated 55-60 mph. I ran mine up to 92mph once.
I have no desire to ride that hard. Maybe I am getting old.

So far mpg seems to be effected by 1) rpm's 2) weight 3) temperature 4) presnece or absence of loads that create drag. All things one would expect mpg.
I'm going to try the long way on my commute where I can ride one-lane roads @ about 50mph and see how I do.
