engine stalling

Make sure your battery is filled to the line with distilled water and make sure it is charged. I had a similar experience, my battery was not charged good due to it was low on water. The motor wouldn't stay idled up and would die at red lights unless I kept the throttle open. I went home added water and put the battery on a slow charge (2a) and this solved my problem. Hope this helps. Later, Bryan D. A19 Houston/Spring,TX --- In DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com, Blake McCarty wrote:

won't. Every time I let the engine idle down to around one thousand rpm it will stall out. I can keep the bike running by keeping my hand on the throttle or adjusting the idle screw. The idle screw only works if I adjust the rpm to far too high, at least two thousand rpm idle speed. I have checked the gas cap to make sure that it is venting into the tank properly, I think it is. Does anyone know of the problem I am experiencing and maybe the fix for the aforementioned problem?

Could be tight valve clearances, too.

Alright, pardn'r, there's only room on this list for one Blake. Draw! :-) Seriously, though, it wasn't clear from your post whether adjusting the idle adjustment barrel can get your bike to idle in the factory recommended 1200-1600 RPM range. The barrel adjuster is the bronze-colored thing on the right side of the carb. There's also an idle adjustment screw on the underside of the carb, but you have to remove a plug to get at it and it's mainly intended to set the fuel/air ratio at idle. I'm referring to the bronze-colored adjuster on the right side of the carb in my previous paragraph. -- Blake Sobiloff San Jose, CA (USA)

Is this a bike you just purchased ? Or have you been riding it and all of a sudden does this? My klr likes to be set 1400-1500 rpm with some fiddling of the idle adjuster on the side of the carb, thats why it's there. It varies with heat and traffic. Frankly mine would stall if I idled it down to 1000 rpm. and thats a bad stall. the kind that can break motors. Though now that I think about it, leaving the vac. line off the carb makes things funky like that.till you run out fuelin the bowl. unless your petcock is always stuck open. turning the knob on the side of the carb is like twisting on the trottle. should be no jump from 1-2k. idle is done thrrough the pilot jet inside the carb and is easily clogged. trying to cover several bases here. leave the cap open and try idleing. blowing compressed air into the gas cap vents can actually destroy the plastic and rubber things in there. good luck and happy fishen. --- In DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com, Blake McCarty wrote:

Sounds like the biggest problem I have had with my DR400 and KLR, PLUGGED UP PILOT JETS. I have installed fuel filters, use STABIL, and try to drain gas anytime it get over a month old. My old Ford van runs the stuff fine, even 2 stroke premix from my old '79 Husky! I have had the carb off my DRZ400 about 7 times over junk in the carb! A mixture of lead shot and silicone will do the trick. Also new grips like the "Pro Grip" 714 Dual Sport Grip really help.
