I just got my handguards from Fred at Arrowhead. I'm having some
difficulty installing these things. I read somewhere (unfortunately
I've forgotten where) that with these, you wouldn't have to cut the
levers. It doesn't seem to be the case but I could be doing something
wrong so I wanted to get some thoughts from you folks.
Thanks.

I have em on my A-18, and it's tight but they do in
fact fit. Best advice is leave all bolts loose till
you get them where you want them, then tighten. At
first they seem a little confining, but this quickly
goes away...
Good choice on hand guards btw, I have saved a lot of
money by these taking thew brunt of stupidity, versus
the old guards or my hands..

you can't install them so the guards are flush with the
levers ... mine sit above the levers but I have freakin
huge brush deflectors so it doesn't matter if I take a fall
as the plastic will take the whack.
so if you squat down infront of the bike the handguards
are pretty much facing forward and the levers are at 10
to 15 degrees.
this is with the stock bars.

This is important. The reason, at least in my case, wasn't very
obvious....until I had to panic brake.
The Maier bars are just close enough to stop brake lever movement by
blocking the short end of the brake lever at max travel.
Just be sure your levers aren't inline with the Maier bars. I just
angled my levers downward a bit..better for standing anyway.

I've gotten some advice (and from the instruction sheet) to do some
bending of the bars. I haven't yet purchased the wind deflectors but
I'm assuming this will prevent those from being installed properly.
Not having seen them yet, are they designed such that there is some
room for minor mods? Example: the Moose skid plate I also purchased
has slots rather than a hole for mounting bolts.
The other question I have regards the orientation of the Maiers. The
instructions indicate that they should point anywhere between level to
the ground to 10 degrees down. Not having ever ridden a bike offroad,
I'm wondering what the reasoning behind this is. My only thought was
that if you happened to hit a non-moving, massive object with the bar,
that it could continue to bend around and then really trap your wrist
as you flew over. Just curious. By the way, the Maiers do fit but at
a 10 degree up position which prompted this thread.
Thanks again all for your help.

Correct, they point down to prevent crushing your hand
"in the big one". I was under the impression you had
the Wind deflectors too? I consider these mandatory
for the riding I do, at times I use the wind
deflectors to push aside saplings, bounce o0ff rock
walls, and to just protect them (my hands) against the
full force of the wind/storm/hail, and the frequent
blackberry branch that has grown across the SFR. If I
remember, I bent the bar in the vise as per their
instructions, and had to just loosen everything, Maeir
bars, clutch, brake, and wiggle it all around till it
was cozy. At first it left my clutch/brake lower,
which was different than I was used to, but now I dont
give it a thought. Get the brush guards/winde
deflectors, they are fashizzle marizzle.
Word
Sean, A-18, big fat and red, and so is my bike.

Mine didn't need any bending at all, just assemble them loosely and
gradually tighten down each end until they pull themselves 'right'.

The only problem I see with that technique is that you're storing an
enormous amount of energy in the bolts. Over time, with vibration,
oxidation etc., they may fatigue and finally break ... or break when
you actually use them.
