klr high rpm's
I'm only 20 miles from the magic 1000 mile mark on my 2005 KLR, at
which point, the owners manual and the little sticker on the speedo
tell me that I can go over 6000 rpms. Do I want to? Staying under
4000 rpm's for the first 500 miles required paying attention, but I've
noticed that I have rarely gone over 5500 rpm's since then. My bike
seems happiest at about 4500 rpms. I did notice the engine gradually
seeming smoother up until about 450 miles, then it seemed to stay
there. Also ran noticeably smoother after the first oil change. Any
of you guys ever redline it? What's your opinions? Any reason to?

I've never seen the need to redline.
Even at the dragstrip,I'm certain that my speedshiftin at 5800, didn't
bring me to redline.
What's the point if the power ain't there,,,,,,right!?!

Just make sure the valves are adjusted, oils changed,
and then open that f***er up dude, break-in's done,
time to ride. The KLR aint got much on a sport bike,
but more than enough to do some really stupid s**t!
I hated the break in!

I have been told (though I know squat myself) that
running these engines at higher RPM's but not over red
line is good for them, same with all OHC motors?

Hey Rick, what's shaking.
I actually think my wife wakes up before the action starts. Probably a
2 could do it depending how deep, how far it was and the strata. This
was a 5 and really didn't do any damage that I have heard about. You must live on the New Madras fault. We always think of earthquakes
on the coastal West and forget about the rest of the country. You have
had some really bad one back there.
Regards
George

Sounds like we have the same engine. Why go to red line if the power drops
off after 6000? Besides, high revs do nothing good for an engine.
