I am making arrangements to buy a new KLR and have asked for a few
things from the dealer such as Kawasaki bags for tank and rear.
Also
I wanted to have them install a 12 volt adapter so that I could plug
in
my Garmin Etrex GPS. The dealership mentioned that a 12 volt adapter
may draw down the battery and it may not be a good idea. Has anyone
set one up and is this something I could do myself? It has been the
excellent network of KLR owners in this group that helped me make my
decision on this bike. Thanks in advance for your replies.

newbie help: adapter for gps
I put on on myself for exactly the same purpose. I used the existing "city
lights" wires up front. I clipped off the supplied connectors and put on
some of my own to connect to the 12V's wires. Then I wrapped the 12V in
gaffers tape and zip-tied it to the fairing bracket. Pictures are here:

These are before the tape though. It was shorting to the bracket; the tape
fixed that.
Havn't had any battery issues. The GPS really doesn't pull much juice.
I've used it for a compressor for short bursts, too.

nyc dohickey swap out
Folks, for those of you in the area who haven't done so I will be
swapping out my dohickey within the next week. I haven't done this
before, but the great directions provided on marknet.com should make
it fairly smooth sailing. So if you would somehow feel more
comfortable surrounding yourself with a fellow dohickey novice for the
proceedure just drop me a line.
Also, I'm still trying to get my hands on the rotor holder wrench and
the rotor puller bolt if anyone has a set I can borrow. I'll be glad
to pay shipping both ways. Thanks.

I run Garmin GPS's and have them wired to a switched circuit. In my opinion you should wire this yourself in case it fails while you are no where near a dealer you will know how the bike is wired and where the circuit has failed. If you are totally electrically clueless I bet you have a friend that is competent and can show you how it is done. Here is a simple $10 parts list of a switched power circuit I have used for several years on several bikes with no failures.. http://www.fjrtech.com/getdbitem.cfm?item=25 I have the componenets zip tied to the back of the coolant resevoir bracket of the KLR. Switch power lead comes off one of the spare whires behind the headlight. Jim> I wanted to have them install a 12 volt adapter so that I could plug > in > my Garmin Etrex GPS.
