the bmw thing & the klr
My Opinion:
BMW's - They look like a hammerhead shark. I love to see ride
reports where the BMW street bikes (they call Adventure Bikes) are
laying on their sides in the middle of a gravel road. When anyone
gets above 650cc, they are on a Street Bike! I love my A16. I can't
stand the thought of riding to the deer lease and once there, having
to wrestle a street bike the last 6 miles down the nasty dirt road.
When I show up on my KLR, I love the last six miles of that nasty
dirt road. Once I have checked in at the lease, I do the 6 mile road
over & over.
Last weekend my bud (A15) & I (A16) went on a little 100 miler (all
street) and ended our run at the local city park. They had some
people with their vintage cars on display, racing boats, group of
HD's, group of BMW's, and a group of sportbikes. We parked in the
Dual-Sport area. Within 5 minutes: all the sportbike guys came over,
most of the HD guys came over, and the vintage car guys came over.
The vintage car & HD people were like: man I had an enduro in the
70's and I just don't see these anymore. We were like, yeah that's
because we are in the woods and usually try to be where nobody goes.
The sportbike guys were like: shit I gotta have one of these, can you
wheelie, mind if I sit on it, oh this adjusts there? We were like,
hell yeah we can wheelie. I guess the BMW guys were afraid we might
ask them to ride w/ us.
Point is the KLR will draw a crowd, get the looks, stir the
imagination of riders, put that feeling in you like when you were 10
years old and up to no good. I felt like a 10 point buck coming out
of the woods.
This weekend we are going to show the sportbike guys our little 88
mile twistie route. Tony & I will have absolutely no problem leading
the pack. We are going to have a blast, all of us. We are seriously
thinking about a helmet cam to film our exploits. We probably
committed over 100 moving violations Sunday - oops. Sorry officer
this is a no wheelie zone? The speed limit is what? This road is
really closed? Donuts are illegal? I thought everyone made a speed
run here! We were just practicing wheelies so we would be safer in
our traffic wheelies. I have mud over my inspection sticker? These
tires look illegal? Yes that is beer in the cooler on the rack. Yes
this is my gun in the tank bag.
I will never be without a KLR. If my bride would ride - I would
probably have a Strom in addition to my KLR.

Well, I get what you're saying but I disagree. I think
it really depends on the rider. If I took that
attitude, I'd have missed out this last year on riding
with a couple of the most patient and skillful
off-road riders I know. Both of them can take their
GSs (an 1100 & and 1150) anywhere I can take my KLR
and then some. Both will admit that ultimately for a
really skilled rider there's that last place only the
KLR will go (and one also owns a KLR) but at that
point we're talking way more knarly than a "nasty dirt
road."
I just hate to see any of us "classifying" riders
willy nilly because of the particular bike they ride.
KLR riders don't like it when it's done to them; why
would anyone else? The adventure spirit lives in a lot
of people and it's got nothing to do with what kind of
bike they ride.

Yeah, Amen Susan. I'm just unsure what you're saying. Don't classify
riders, while we are in a classified newsgroup? Would a KLR rider
really care if they were classied? I doubt it. Patient and skillful is
exactly what a big cc GS rider has to be. More so than a KLR rider
when the asphault ends. But, I'm sure when a non-skilled amateur like
myself puts past a skilled rider struggling on an 1150GS, the bmw
rider has to be asking himself, "is this still fun...what am I trying
to prove?". I believe that was reddog's focus. When you set out to
have fun, and you're not, what's the point? Hey, I embrace all DS
riders, no matter what bike. We all like to find humour in other
people's mistakes, even our own. Most of us posting in this KLR group
did classify ourselves. We are opinionated. Not all of us are as
objective as Susan is, as some of us are not concerned with taking the
middle ground to apeze others or being politically correct. I agree
with Susan just as I agree with reddog. Authoring either comment
though, reddog's humourous approach seems to realize that this is a
KLR extension of the DSN. I think that's why the DSN groups ARE
classified.
ride on!

Kyle,
Nothing wrong with "classifying riders" per se, as
long as it's not done in a hateful, hurtful manner. If
you or anyone else wants to classify me as a KLR rider
who also rides a Harley, that's fine...as long as you
don't STEREOTYPE me as one of those Yuppie Harley
riders who trailers his bike everywhere and spends
exhorbitant amounts of time "polishing the chrome" and
being a "poser". I ride a Harley because I got a good
deal on one and had wanted one since at least 1989.
I'm VERY pleased with my Harley, as with my KLR.
Even if you or someone else want to stereotype me,
there's nothing I can do about it and couldn't really
care less, because when it gets right down to it, it's
a case of Mind over Matter". Since I don't personally
know anyone who posts to this group, if they want to
form impressions of me based on what I ride, I really
don't MIND...because they DON'T MATTER... ;^) If it
were a personal friend making inaccurate statements
about me, I might be offended.
Obviously, if that's the approach (insulting/hurtful)
some want to take (and some postings would lead me to
believe so)then that's their business and they're
really only hurting themselves, because sooner or
later, if the personal attacks continue, then they're
going to be discounted as trolls, troublemakers or
just flamers in general, whose postings will only be
ignored or deleted when they hit the inbox, whether
they have something of value to add to the group or
not.
IMO, there's too much of the following attitudes
expressed:
1. BMWs (or any other DS bikes) are inferior to KLRs.
2. Harleys and their owners are the scum of the earth.
Let's get real, people - this KLR group (if I'm not
mistaken) was probably established to further the
sport/hobby/passion of KLR riders/enthusiasts, by
providing a good cross reference of maintenance issues
and personal experiences with this fine DS mount.
Jabbing at Beemers, Harleys, or anyting NOT a KLR is
just sophomoric, at best!
If one's only pleasure is derived from tearing
down/judging others or their equipment, that person is
deserving of MUCH sympathy, or disgust - take your
pick.

For me and for other folks that I like to ride with, it's not necessarily
about being politically correct -- it's about being tired of seeing riders
of different stripes bash each other (insert chest-beating here), knowing
that it's bad for the sport that I care the most about. There's nothing
wrong with being opinionated, but if someone is going to systematically
categorize their fellow riders based on what brand they are loyal to, it
becomes time for them to STFU. At the same time, if you consciously care
about the sport, you tend to take the middle ground because collectively the
sport benefits from that.

Scott, I agree with most of what you're saying. In fact I was about to
reply to the HD postings. While my opinion of HD's is not favorable, I
have no problem with them. But like you, have an opinion of the
posers. But in honor of your well put statements, I will refrain from
dogging any kind of bike, just to dog it. Honestly, I don't think HD's
or any other mfr is worth discussing in this group if they don't make
a DS bike. And really, don't ever defend your ownership of an HD. As
we say in the world of shooting sports, I bought this gun, because I
didn't have one. Simple as that. I bought a homosexual looking scooter
a couple years back, and liked it. Why? It's got two wheels, and I
didn't have one.
HD's have two wheels. Someone with an HD and a KLR is a valuable
resourse. The more bikes/type of bikes a person has, the more I value
their opinions and ride impressions. Good post Scott. This group is
starting to get entertaining, maybe even fun (course, I'm a captive
audience while at work!)

the bmw thing & the klr
Kyle hit it on the head, and the guy after him.
Some folks can't see the forest for the trees. Maybe for the tangent
thinkers I should have written something like this: I have a KLR and I
just love it. I have love for other bikes too. Those that get it, get
it.
ps: Ms. Susan, I would not think that you would know what it feels like
to be excited as a 10 year old boy.
