license plate/inspection sticker location

Post by Scott L. Walker » Sat Apr 23, 2005 9:57 am

When I bought my KLR I read (probably on this list serv) that the first thing to do was to move the license plate and inspection sticker hanger so it wouldn't get caught up on the rear tire. I never moved it. My rear tire ate the inspection sticker extension and the sticker. Question: Where do you all put your inspection sticker? (I'm in Texas if it makes a difference legal-wise that you know of.) I don't think the sticker will fit immediately below the tail light. Suggestions. Pictures. Thanks, Scott

Scott, You're correct - each state is different. In VA, the sticker is supposed to be on the LH fork tube, but some people mount them on plates located on the LH side of the bike. Both my inspection, and county sticker are on my LH fork tube: http://www.mindspring.com/~gbyoung2/misc/klrstuff/cyclebrake1.jpg Guy A16 Richmond, VA -----Original Message----- From: "Scott L. Having never had to deal with an inspection system, can you guys explain what is inspected and what the sticker signifies. Also, what does the county inspection cover that the state wouldn't? (Besides double-dipping the tax dollars). cw a3 --- In DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com, "Guy B. Young II" wrote:

The dealer spens maybe 5 minutes checking the horn, headlight, turnsignals and brakelight. Then charges $12.50 in Texas.

In Vermont, they do all that J Fortner said, plus they verify your registration and insurance info, and they check the tires and steering head bearing. In VT, the inspection sticker goes either on the Left fork tube, or it can go in the left hand corner of the windscreen/ fairing if equipped, but most folks choose to keep it on the fork tube. Less conspicous that way. -realpolitiklr

CW, The state inspection for bikes covers the listed below. Below that are the links to the Virginia Code that outlines what its respective section covers during an inspection. The county sticker has nothing to do with inspection. It's basically a tax sticker and you can't get one unless you've paid personal property tax on the vehicle. Guy Section 330 - Motorcycle inspection Section 340 - Motorcycle brakes Section 350 - Motorcycle seat, steering and suspension Section 360 - Motorcycle lights: headlamp, rear, signal, warnin... Section 370 - Motorcycle mirror Section 380 - Motorcycle horn Section 390 - Motorcycle muffler and exhaust system Section 400 - Motorcycle tires, wheels, rims Section 410 - Motorcycle windscreen and glazing Section 420 - Motorcycle fuel system http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?000+reg+19VAC30-70-330 http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?000+reg+19VAC30-70-340 http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?000+reg+19VAC30-70-350 http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?000+reg+19VAC30-70-360 http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?000+reg+19VAC30-70-370 http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?000+reg+19VAC30-70-380 http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?000+reg+19VAC30-70-400 http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?000+reg+19VAC30-70-410 http://leg1.state.va.us/cgi-bin/legp504.exe?000+reg+19VAC30-70-420 -----Original Message----- From: prooffshore Sent: Apr 23, 2005 11:48 PM To: DSN_KLR650@yahoogroups.com Subject: [DSN_KLR650] Re: License Plate/Inspection Sticker location Having never had to deal with an inspection system, can you guys explain what is inspected and what the sticker signifies. Is this street legal? Probably not, but if it helps being noticed and if the cops have better things to do then it looks pretty good. Craig A18 San Jose CA

PLEASE STOP THIS THREAD!!!!!!!!!!!!! If someone in the legislature in this crazy state of California finds out about this all of us left coasters will get sucked in. I can already hear the thought process........another way to keep people safe (regulation) and a revenue enhancer (tax)...it's a governmental no brainer!
