Agreed! I think you hit the nail on the head--its more important to keep the chain free of abrasive gunk than it is to keep it heavily lubricated. Especially on a vehicle that sees anything other than clean, paved roads. The ideal chain product would be one that is a "heavy" dry lubricant. I don't know how that can be achieved, though.
