Well, I did it. Changed the oil on my 2004 KLR250. It was at 1550 miles, and PO claims to have done it several times...but who really knows? First time EVER changing the oil on ANYTHING. I am NOT a mechanic by any means, but was told I could probably do this one. Figured you seasoned macho mechanic biker guys would get a kick out of a woman's perspective on the whole ordeal. 1. Gather tools, oil drain pan, oil filter, oil, and paper towels just in case. 2. Warmed up bike. Turned it off. 3. Tried to loosen drain plug. UGH! It's totally stuck. 4. Called friend and asked for advice 5. Husband came to watch in amusement and I asked him to do it for me. He did. Then left. 6. Began loosening, expecting quarts of super hot Batman-boiling oil to spurt out. It didn't. 7. Finally plug plopped out onto the screen, oil streamed out into drain pan. Cool! 8. Remembered bike had to be in totally upright position, shifted bike upright. 9. Draining oil now misses the drain pan and streams all over garage floor. 10. Rip off paper towels and throw at mess with one hand while steadying bike with other. 11. Attempt to locate tools to remove oil filter cover. Grumble at teenage son who rearranged tools. 12. Carefully remove cover (took a thin screw driver to work it off) 13. Oil gushes out all over bike, skid plate, garage floor. 14. Throw more paper towels at the growing mess. 15. Replace filter, put back on cover. 16. Attempt to unscrew thingie where you add the oil. (what's that called, anyway?) 17. Stuck. Call husband again. He did it, saw mess on garage floor and rolled his eyes. 18. Hunted around for funnel, began adding oil. 19. Realized I hadn't replaced drain plug before adding oil. Oil leaks out onto garage floor. MORE paper towels. 20. Reinstalled oil drain plug, added oil. 21. Took it for a test drive. IT WORKS!!! 22. Lol, Thanks Janna for injecting a bit of humour back on the list and for making me have my first laugh of the day..... Reminds me of the first time I ever changed the oil in my dads car - forgot the oil drain plug and didn't notice the pool of oil forming under the car until I had dumped the 4th qt. of oil in..............(of course that was back in '72 or so)........... cheers -don

I striped the drain plug once by using too much brute force. That's my changing oil screw up. But hey you change your own oil, adjust your own valves etc., think of the money you save. Criswell

Well first oil change I did the "pull the filter" thing and oiled the side of my bike too, just did'nt expect that much oil to come out with the filter. Now I allow some more time to let the filter cavity drain, and stand by with a old towel to catch the drips. (Bike leaned to the right a little, so the excess flows towards the outter part of the filter cavity before removing cover.) As for adding oil without a drain plug, well I tend to do that anyway, figure whatever oil I have laying around (any type) 1/2 Qt or so I pour in and flush the bottom of the motor. Just hope she put the metal bypass filter tube in the new filter and did'nt toss it out with the old filter. Bet the feeling of doing it oneself is way better than paying. Dooden A15 Green Ape
