survey questions: oil change intervals and expected oil usage

Post by lazakres » Thu Mar 17, 2005 11:55 pm

I know, I know, the KLR manual says the oil is good for 6,000 miles and to check the level every day before riding. That is what the manual says. There it is in black and white, so it MUST be true. BUT, What I REALLY want to know is the concensus as to what KLR riders are ACTUALLY doing in the REAL world. 1.] How far do you normally ride before changing oil? 2.] How often do you check the oil level? 3.] For those that have actually ridden up to that 6,000 mile oil change, given no obvious oil leaks and no oil burning, what would be "NORMAL" oil consumption for a KLR in good condition? 4.] How much spare oil and how many filters should I bring along on a two month, 10,000 km ride [ last time I went to Baja, KLR oil filters were NOT easily found ] thanks LAZ 1

survey questions: oil change intervals and expected oil usage

Some of it depends on how much oil your bike normally uses, it seems to vary greatly. My '0l uses hardly any oil between oil changes, maybe a couple of ounces. I ride quite a bit, 20,000 miles a year or so on the KLR. I change my oil and filter at 3,000 miles. I am planning a long trip this summer, around 6,000 miles. I will change my oil before I leave and then about mid-way through the trip. I am carrying a filter plus one quart of oil. I check my oil level (and coolant level and brake fluid levels along with chain tension) every day before I ride. Takes about 30 seconds. lazakres wrote: I know, I know, the KLR manual says the oil is good for 6,000 miles and to check the level every day before riding. That is what the manual says. survey questions: oil change intervals and expected oil usage

From this unreal world, 1. 2,500 to 3,000 miles. $9.00 to change the 2.5 L 20/50W and filter; good, cheap insurance policy. 2. Every time I ride it. I learned the "golden circle" routine as an rookie firefighter. Been doin' it for a long, long time. another good, cheap insurance policy. 3. I haven't noticed any appreciable oil consumption. Musta been the breakin procedure done by the PO. and 4. 10000KM = 6000 mi.......at least 2, no more than 4 filters. You should be able to oil in the major towns in Baja, if not, 12 qts oughta do ya. Good luck on your adventure. Buddy bseifert71@...

I paid 4685 for my new 03 out the door. With 400 miles and knowin what I know now about what the Mighty KLR has to offer, I wouldn't shun the deal. What's a few hundred more for a life changin event! Just me, Rod
