master link?
When chain replacement time comes, I was wondering if using a master
link is an OK way to go or should I just stick with the continous
chain? Any suggestions?

A rivet style master link is safer and stronger than a clip style.

I plan to stay with a masterlinkless chain.
Installing a new chain is a good way to make sure the
rear swingarm is always lubed. Installing a chain of
this type is not really that big a job, after you have
assimilated the learning curve.

Probably the only place to get an endless chain is O.E.M. through Kawasaki. You will end of paying top dollar for an inferior chain and from the looks of it, it will still have a rivet style masterlink.

What exactly is "inferior" about the OEM chain? Mine lasted for 12,000 miles and stayed well within wear limits as indicated by Krokko's chain stretch gauge; I finally replaced it when the plating on the rollers began to wear through in a few spots, though the chain was still well within spec. I was quite surprised by how long it lasted. Not much serious mud in those 12K but plenty of dirt roads and NYC winter road salt/sand. Me too. I got 17,000 miles out of my stock chain on my Tengai. I would have kept it on the bike for another 1 or 2K, but I was leaving on a 2,500 mile trip and didn't want to risk it. A master linked chain is fine. I've run about 7 or 8 of them so far on KLRs with no trouble. Never lost a link or a clip. Mark>When chain replacement time comes, I was wondering if using a master >link is an OK way to go or should I just stick with the continous >chain? Any suggestions?

Chain technology has marched on. About the only way you can get an O-ring chain from RK these days is to buy a new motorcycle. My RK chain lasted a little over 20,000 miles. It was still well within spec for stretch but one o-ring finally went south allowing one of the side plates to cock. I replaced it with a D.I.D. x-ring chain for about $100.

I got 31000 km out of mine. The guys at "Champion" in Roswell didn't
realize that Cdn speedos are in km, and they were going into orbit until
I told them.

I have heard all my life how weak a master link is compared to the rest of the chain. I am 46 years old, and have had 36 motorcycles of which 90% were chain drive. I have never had a master link break or come apart. As for me, I fear not the master link.
