O.K. I'm confused. I was going to bypass the safety switches, and I found something odd. My A15 starts and runs in gear, clutch pulled, and sidestand down. The owner's manual says the A15 has both switches but by chanch were they removed for 2001 or do I have an oddball? Thanks for comeback Jim

The bike will start with the sidestand down only if the transmission is in neutral OR the clutch lever is pulled. But, if you try to release the clutch with the bike running and in gear with the sidestand down the engine should die. Jim

My A15 does not start in gear, clutch in or otherwise. jt wilson

About six weeks ago, I had trouble with one of the safety switches. When I let out the clutch in first gear, the motor died. Got it going after working the clutch and sidestand several times. Got home that way. Next day it wouldn't go at all. I didn't have any of those connectors like Mark's procedure described, so I used a "Scotch Lock" to short between the black w/ yellow tracer and blue w/ red tracer wires going to the clutch. It will now start in gear with the clutch out and the sidestand down. Everything worked fine this way except the neutral light would not go out in any gear. So I looked at the clutch switch. It was a little bit discolored, not really corroded, so I wiped the contacts with a rag and put it back together. Then the neutral light worked normal. The way I've got it figured, if the clutch switch fails again, the most it will do now is have the neutral light on when in gear. While I was at it, I looked inside the sidestand switch, it looked new inside. I'm not recommending that anyone do it this way, but if you are ever stranded away from home, it will work to short between the two traced wires to the clutch. I know just enough about 'lectricity to be dangerous and don't usually touch the wiring until necessary. Still don't understand why the sidestand switch needs to be defeated also. How about getting a little air and the bounce down makes the sidestand actually come down and keeeeel the motor ? Or in a hurry to get a foot down off road and hooking the side stand and again.. keeeeeeeling the motor ? Couple ideas I suspose. Dooden

Tried it with the sidestand up, down, clutch in, clutch out, in gear, in neutral. Seems to me that the need to do the sidestand is negated when the clutch switch is shorted. Again, I'm not recommending that anyone do it this way. If someone gets stranded because of the clutch switch, this method could possibly get them home. My KLR has been done this way for six weeks and over 2,000 miles, haven't seen any ill effects from it yet. I'll let you know if I do see effects from it. Thanks for your input on the subject. Allan A14 As an afterthought, I'd like to see someone put together a package for the KLR including the correct connectors for defeating the safety switches and accessory connectors for things like extra lighting, electric vest, heated grips, stereo, refrigerator, microwave....

Guys, I just sent Ron a couple of sites for info on disabling his clutch and side stand switches. After forwarding I thought I'd try to access the sites and found I couldn't enter either of them.
