Or urban riding. The one thing the 650 could do was carry an absolute sh*tload of cargo. Saddlebags, tankbag, topbox.....

You wouldn't blow it up if you did 65, and stopped every tankful for 15min or so to walk around and take a break. The last time I went dualsporting on my 250, it was 90mi each way on the highway then 35mi of nasty, rocky single-track. Loads of fun. I'd rather go 65 on the highway than punish myself in the woods. The 650 is forgiving enough for a beginner if they are a very large person. Otherwise the 250 (KLR or SS) would be ideal. Devon

The KLR250 and the SS are actually quite different. The KLR is kickstart-only and water-cooled. The sherpa is electric start and air-cooled. The Sherpa seat also sits quite a bit lower than the KLR250. Whether the KLR250 is a suitable brginner's bike depends on the beginner. A friend not too long ago bought a KLR250 for his wife, hoping to introduce her to offroad riding. She never bonded with the 250 due to the lack of an electric start. She is an accomplished road rider who didn't like her F650 much because she found it unstable in crosswinds, but who gets along fine with her ZRX1100. My view: if seat height is not an issue, the KLR650 makes a better beginner bike than the 250: easy to ride, forgiving and of course, electric start. There is a woman in my local club who has a Sherpa that doesn't get much use. The rest of us always sniff around enviously, hoping to snag it for our wives or girlfriends.
