info on central america

Do I need knobby's for Central America or can I use a tire such as the (Pirelli MT 90 Scorpion S/T), (Avon43/AM44 Distanzia) or Metzeler Tourance tires. Seems like a high mileage tire would be the way to go, also quite rolling, any suggestions anyone? Whats the best bet for currency, I hear travelers checks are hard to cash in certain parts of the country. I don't want to carry a lot of cash if you know what I mean. Gary

Don't know by experience. Did read on Eldon's site that a rider used stock tires and made it from Canada down to C or S America. Those stock tires are supposed to wear quick. I myself run Gripsters in Jaxksonville Fl. Just lost a bit of leather off my left boot yesterday doing a 30MPH exit ramp. These tires hold. 8K mi or better for the rear is good life and I ride hard. I dream of doing the Fl-Alaska ride or Fl- Brazil. I will use Gripsters. High Psi for the highways and ~18-20 psi for off road. I just have something against the really large footprint of some of the dualsport tires. Bad experiences with dunlop d604. Reading other ride reports you might need some sort of gripping ability in S. or C America. But hey, one crazy french man rode around the world on a sport bike F1 or some other crazy big bike. --- In DSN_klr650@yahoogroups.com, "djhs4catsat404" wrote:

Knobbies would be a bad idea; they'd be mostly used up before you got out of Mexico. I went down a few times on pure street tires, Metzler Marathons. I'd go with Avon Gripsters

As Conall said Traveler's checks have been made obsolete by ATMs. Remember you'll need a credit card, not a debit, to get your ride into Mexico. Bogdan

I think it's fine to post an answer to a question that directly names a vendor and his product. However, if it's just a general question about a product, like, "Anyone know where I can get a whatchyamathingy?" vendor responses about price and availability, like, "I have 'em; $29.95 in stock" should be reserved for Vendor Friday or otherwise communicated off-list.
