clutch replacement

Post by Sean Noll » Sat Mar 22, 2003 7:09 am

The M1030 (I think that is the designation) is in use by all Army divisions. Most scout units and spotters will have a few of them. However when crossing unpopulated desert - the sand is REALLY deep and thick. I dont theink the KLR would be apppropriate. Last go - we had many whelled vehicles that did not fair so well in the campaign. The Hummers ere fine - but all the diesel powered Cutv and Pickups got smoked by the thick sand. Sean

clutch replacement

Post by Stuart Mumford » Sat Mar 22, 2003 1:32 pm

I did. About a month ago, it was an easy job. What year is yours? The reason I ask is that my EBC kit was short one plate and one disc. The post 96's have more plates. And the outermost disc is rotated in reference to the others. You'll see what I mean when you pop it apart. While you're in there, take a look at the oil screen. Someone wrote a really good set of directions, do a Google search for KLR 650 clutch replacement and it'll pop up. I got a bit over 21k miles out of mine but I abused the blessed thing and smoked it. It's a super easy job and after pricing out the stock one for $160 and an EBC Dirt Racer for less than $80, I went EBC. Clutch springs from EBC are stiffer, but not bad. You've hit it on the head. I do everything in my power to stay off four-lane roads. Living in Mississippi, you'd think I would have easier access to good country riding, but urban sprawl is alive and well here as everywhere else. But when I do venture out, I stay off the beaten path and find the beaten UP path that everyone else has forgotten. I was just in the Delta region for a week working and had to take my car. The drive home yesterday with sun and low 70's temps really made me miss my bike. A well prepped Mustang is a good time on hilly, curvey roads...but not as good as on my KLR. Lamar A14

I need to replace the clutch on my 92 KLR-650 A6. Can anyone list the parts with numbers that need to be ordered to replace it. Plus, any advice on doing the job. Things to make sure that I do and things to avoid. Thanks, Bill "SandShark" 92 KLR-650 03 V-Strom Central Florida
