wd40 okay for oring chains?

Post by Al Tokarchik » Fri Sep 24, 2004 2:36 pm

I used WD 40 to clean my chain last night, then lubricated with PJ1. Does anyone know if WD40 is okay for o-ring chains? Great time to ask.

That's all I use on my chain. Ride - get home - spray while warm. Repeat. Jim

That's also all I use. I've found that an additional benefit is that you don't have to spray it on a warm chain. The stuff is thin enough to get in where it needs to on a cold chain, unlike say gear oil. Bogdan

Hmmm! How did that used to go? Heat gear grease and paraffin wax in a container on the stove till your significant other started yelling at you then soak chain and let cool. Hang to drip. Alan Henderson A13 Iowa pre o ring

I use wd 40 just to clean ther chain, scrubbed with tooth brush top and bottom, then I dry it with a rag, then I use Bardall Chain lube, goes on foamy and then hardens. My chain has 6000 miles on it, looks brand new --- Bogdan Swider wrote:

WD40 to clean and then Chain-Wax on a warm chain. 9000 miles and no problems yet. Ed Snow 2001 KLR650

Try following me through the woods and swamps and see what that chain looks like. Heck I got little over 4000 miles on the odometer and I am starting to think replacement soon, steel rear 45t sprocket (with mud groves) even less miles that is starting to look pretty worn too. Glad I kept the OEM on the wall, but thats ok cause I finally got around to swaping that 15t front for the 14t thats been on my desk over a year or two so geared with 14/45 its pretty much like a supercharged tractor in the woods, and a slow way too geared low ride on the highway. Reckon if mostly street/highway a chain could stay all pretty and such, but I did'nt buy a KLR to play on the pavement much anyway. Oh... I just use WD40/Walmart brand and last few time silicon spray only it seems to clean it off pretty well and stays dry to keep the dust/dirt from caking on.
