dropped my klr while pushing it under cover out of an ice storm last nov only had it 3 days did nearly 200$ worth of damage including bending the stock shift lever. i was able to bend it back and on close inspection the welds had held well but the metal was so weak i was able to straighten it by hand. another drop would prob snap the metal not the weld. i went ahead and got the dual star one too with the shield. it just feels better for one and i now have my stock one i can carry for spare.

Yes I know better but a couple of years ago when the original shifter separated at the weld I ended up buying another stocker from the dealer, and got the old one rewelded at work.I had intended to ziptie my repaired spare somewhere on the bike, but never did. Luckily I was in town when my latest lever let go today.Stuck in first gear, cursed myself for not bringing my toolbag with repair items because " wasn't going too far". So, 30 minutes later, with a brand-spanking new pair of Dollar Store Vise-Grips strained to the max, third gear was found which was good enough to get home. If you are using the stock lever, always carry brand name vise grips, better yet there really is no excuse for not going to an aftermarket item... .cosmo

I'd be curious to know what's the most miles anyone's racked up on the stock shifter without rewelding/replacing. Mine sure didn't last long.....cosmo

The stock shifter on my A15 lasted 8,0000mi or so, when I finally bent it too bad to use, I took it off and put it in a vise to straighten it. That's when it broke. Welded it up, kept it as a spare. I think Tumu was using it for a good long time afterwards. Devon cosmo_bojinski@... wrote:

Just remember that clip links are single use only. Once you remove the side plate, you lose the press fit on the pins and it won't be as secure the next time. I always backed the plate into the clip to jam it in place, but I've found that a really nasty rock garden combined with backing up the bike can still pop the clip off. I started cleaning the sideplate with a tiny bit of gas after pressing it on, then using quiksteel to bed the clip and smooth over the top of it. Devon
