thumbhead idle mixture screw
I ran across this at the Vulcan newsgroup (used to have a Vulcan 800).
It supposed to fit CVK40's , which are found on Vulcan 1500s and some
Harleys.
Anyone know anything about this?

i have never used them but i have seen them advertised at arrowhead
motorsports (fred) and thought they would be great, since i have
done the airbox mod, screen removal and dynojet kit. my bike has
had more power since but i am sure there is more there and it could
be just a half turn away with this little screw. what i am asking
is has anyone ordered this from fred and tried it, if so what kinda
results did you get. it looks easy to install and for 20 bucks i
dont think it would break the bank.

I bought one from Fred; the installation was a snap. Someone on the
list suggested methods of keep the adjustment from changing, but I
have not had a problem with that.

I installed the extended idle screw on my KLR.
Bought it from Direct Parts in Chicago. They sell a lot of Harley stuff
and the 883 Harley uses the same CVK40 that the KLR does.
Don't think Fred was selling the needles when I bought mine.
It works great. Lets you adjust the idle mixture without any special
tools. Prior to installing the special idle screw I had made a tool to
adjust the idle but it was still awkward to use.
The extended and knurled screw allows easy access for idle mixture adjustment.
Make sure you wear gloves or you will very likely burn your hand.
I've done all the carb mods you mentioned except I did my own jetting
instead of buying the Dynojet kit.
As you say the bike runs so much better now it's like a different bike. It
also runs cooler and gets less MPG but I can still get 200 miles on the
main tank when I'm flogging the bike.
Installing the extended idle mixture screw won't in my opinion give you any
more power, just make it easier to set the idle mixture.

I know it's a dumb question but .
How do you keep track of the number of turn with this extended idle
mixture screw? I`ve been using a small screw driver that has a clip
on it to use as a turn indicator. With just a knurled surface, it
seems easy to lose track of the number of turns.

I just used a sharpie permanent marker to put a line on it. I don't
know if it will stay there permanently.

How do you like having the 36L and 45L bags on your bike? I believe
it was you that had that right? I am contemplating either two 36's or
the 36 and 45. I have a 350 topcase.

It really doesn't matter how many turns you make to the idle screw.
Just adjust it from lean (Screwed in) to a smooth idle.
If you need to count the turns put a black mark on the screw and count your
turns.
