I was heading out for a night time dual sport ride yesterday, too damned hot to ride in the
day. (Phx, Az) I got about 2 blocks form the meeting place and the bike started acting as
though it were running out of gas, I had filled up that morning so I ruled it out and kept
blipping the throttle. I pulled into the parking lot and the engine died 20 feet before the
gathering area and the other bikers, I coasted in.
It would not start back up. I jumpered the side stand switch, no luck. Checked for fuel in
the carb bowl, plenty. Couldn't reach the plug wire so I did not check for spark. If I held
the throttle open, cranked it over for 10 seconds it would light up, not idle, and spew fuel
out of the clear hose to the ground. I suspect a stuck float. This may be due to the surface
rust in my gas tank. I got it used as a 2000 model with 1800 miles. It sat in San Diego with
the original owner before it was sold here in Arizona. The guy I got it from put on a few
hundred miles and let it sit in his garage.
I trucked it home and pulled the carb off. the bowl had light rust deposits and the main jet
was crusty looking but not blocked with debris. The rest of the carb looked great. Cleaned
the air filter and pulled the spark plug. The plug was coated with soot, got a new one and
replaced it.
Before I put it back together, what mods/fixes should I do? I hear about a T valveand an
inline filter, what else can I do? I would rather do it now while that friggin tank is off than
to pull it later.
Thanks for the help!

nklr: is there a klr personality type ?
Prior to buying the KLR I commuted (part-way) to work via bicycle at
least three times a week. My commitment to myself was I'd continue to
bicycle three times a week and ride the KLR two. The very first week
that plan flip flopped. The second week I rode the KLR five times and
have ridden the KLR almost every day since. A quick check of my Excel
spreadsheet shows I've only used my bicycle 25 times since 6/2002. I
guess motorcycling really can be hazardous to your health :>}
