atf v. fork oil

Since mc shop is 40 miles away, is it ok to use ATF instead of fork oil? If so, what type? Thanks. Alan

Thinner than stock fork oil (softer suspension). Gives a very smooth action (less stiction) or so I've heard. Good for the seals and bushings. I might try it in the DRZ forks I have fitted to my KLR at the moment. Don't know which type, I think Dextron III is Dextron III. Devon tambera@... wrote:

Sure you can. I use Mobil1 ATF in my KLX forks and it works great. I picked Mobil1 only because they list the vicoscity of it on their website, so I knew that it was going to be in the right neighborhood (and I'm not sure if oil weight is part of the Dextron/whatever ATF fluid specs, so it's possible that different brands of ATF have different weights). It turns out to be a little heavier than 10wt. Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF Viscosity, ASTM D 445 cSt @ 40 C 34 cSt @ 100 C 7.6 AMSOIL SHOCK THERAPY SUSPEN STL(5) STM(10) Kinematic Viscosity @ 100 C, cSt 4.38 7.33 Kinematic Viscosity @ 40 C, cSt 15.68 32.08 Z DC A5X A12X

Your temperatures sound perfectly normal. During warm weather off road rides, at slow speed, my cooling fan will frequently cycle. I've wired an LED in parallel to the fan to indicate the fan is powered, which is pretty cool to watch it cycle about 5/8 temp reading. At low speeds & stress full riding, there simply isn't enough airflow to keep a KLR cool, which is why there's a fan. Making the mixture richer will help & allow the engine to run a bit cooler.
