bmw's and ktm's looking down their noses?
You are right. We are all prejudice to one degree or another. It's human
nature.
More than likely, the leather cover that you saw was a vinyl tank bra. They
cost about $150 and prevent scratching your $1000 gas tank. Hey, when your
ride cost as much as three KLRs (not counting accessories) you got to be
careful. :-0

Right or wrong though, we all form an opinion. Cmon, tell me you dont
snicker when you see the chromed chopper, with fringe and no front brake.
Example: Today I saw a BMW with a leather gas tank.
Now c'mon a leather gas tank? What does gas do to leather!! What does having
your gas tank covered in leather cost?
I know, I am a cheap bastard, but if I was the wealthiest man on earth, I am
pretty certain I would not cover my tank in leather....

Usually anybody with superior attude, ain't. The guys that can, do. And the
nice ones don't hold it against others just 'cause they want to have a run at
it. (Usually they help you).
Have fun - fall down, get up and do it again!

bmw's and ktm's looking down their noses?
As an owner of a GS and a KLR I couldn't agree more. I was on a 350km GPS
ride 2 weeks ago and several riders completed it on KTM 950s. And yes this
was real offroad, a mix of gravel, single track, and a one decent water
crossing. All bikes were street legal and ranged from 400 to a lone 1200 GS
that got damaged in the water crossing, see link. The GS was doing fine
until then, big guy who is a good rider was on it and was going where I was
on my KLR. No attitudes and everyone had fun. Biggest determining factor
was skill, which is what I lack most!!

Thanks for the link, it does my heart good to see the
rich mans bike drown like a rat. Note in the story it
will be a week before the dealer can fix the freekin
starter! LOL! I sure love my KLR! And there are a
dozen starters within 20 miles of my home, as well as
I think I can figure out the half dozen bolts and
electrical plug to replace it~

For a good camparison of how bad big GS beemers are compared to to
KLRs see what happened to Dustin and his 1150 GS when he tried to
follow my KLR and I along the Rainbow Trail and into the Great Sand
Dunes 3 weeks ago here in Colorado.
The ride report and photos by me is on :
http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/Colorado-Dualsporters/
Dustin's report is the Advrider List on about June 6th.
Dustin did an amazing job considering what he was ridind, but the bike
proved nearly impossible to handle in the sand.
Basically there is no way any big heavy twin with equal riders is
going to come close to the KLR.

What many people fail to realize about the KLR is that with its mild motor,
and lots of torque, it is excellent at tractoring up trails at low speeds.

I don't get a cold shoulder from the KTM owners. Rather, they are amazed at
how well my KLR does.

Where about you at ? Maybe somebody is close so you can get help right now !!! Seriously, you are on target, drill that stupid cap, pull it and back that needle out to say 2 ~2.5 turns from a gentle seat. Starts better, runs better (maybe even cooler) and that lean surge will go away. As somebody else put it its the Best damn $0.00 mod you can do to your KLR. http://members.aol.com/roundr1/CVK40.html Very detailed CVK-40 (KLR) carb info. About 3/4 of the way down the page is a nice photo of the drilled out recycled tuna can KHI used to plug the Idle Mixure (Pilot Circuit) needle. Jake has a nice write-up on how to adjust the best way, but 2~2.5 is the neighborhood most stock bikes run good at. http://www.sagebrushmachine.com/pilottool.html Enjoy da Ride..
