new klr guy... help!!!

Post by silverartisans » Thu May 13, 2004 10:28 am

Maybe it's me, maybe I'm spoiled. I've gone from a BMW 1150 GS to the KLR. What's with the handle grip vibes? At about 3000 rpm they set in and make the mirrors useless, especially the left and the hands get tingley. Is it just my bike or will I get the dreaded dealer cop out "they all do that"? Is there an easy fix or do I have to live with it? Is there a easy to remove windshield that actually works? I know, real men don't need them, but up here in northern Wisconsin summer only lasts about 3 weeks, and the rest of the time we have to deal with the cold wind. Any advice on throttle locks? Any other advice would be greatfully accepted. Jon

Have you read the FAQ yet? http://www.bigcee.com/klr650faq.html#controls I'd start there and that should get you started.

They all do that, sort of. Aluminum handlebars, handguards, bar end weights, etc. DIfferent grips help too. Vibration isolators on the mirror mounts. Good gloves, and don't hold on so tight.

I'm using a Slipstreamer CF40, without the stock fairing. A CF30 works well with the stock fairing according to Bogdan, who we haven't heard from in a while. Either the CF40 or the CF30 are bar mounted, and remove with wing nuts in 30 sec. Around town, or offroad, no windshield works well. Devon

Hack them awful grips off and install some 737's or 714's first off. How new is the bike ? Balancer might be out of adjustment give a look at this: http://klr6500.tripod.com/balancer.htm My bike seemed alot smoother after adjustment, then I just replaced the crappy OEM lever with a aftermarket one. Get a torque wrench and check all motor mounts, if they are loose vibs will get awful. I am sure many others will report other fixes. Nor'den Wisconsin eh ? (Damn southerner's) ;-) Check out: http://www.geocities.com/enduraidrally/ Not so sure if I am going to make it this year, had a blast last year as did a few from this list. Yep, IMHO, it's a substantial upgrade from the stocker, yet uses the power. Not quite as bright as the PIAA, but less than half the cost. Poper aiming is big plus, stock config was too low for the low-beam. Since it high-beam is used much less, my headlight is adjusted to that the low-beam gives has longer reach. High-beam is now too hi for most roads, but is rarely used, 'cept to flash oncoming morons. hth, MarkB
