2003 klr650 for sale! beautiful!

The unthinkable happened. From what I've read in the Clymer manual it (dowel)now resides somewhere in the left crankcase. Any help, insight (best/easy way to retrieve the lil bugger), comforting words or condolences are appreciated. Thanks

Just for the record, one of the steps in my valve check & adjustment procedure - http://klr6500.tripod.com/valves.htm - is to stuff a clean, lint-free rag into that abyss to prevent just such a problem. I just found a very long flexible aluminum bodied magnetic retrieval tool in an AutoZone store. Maybe you could fish around in the abyss with something like that and a flashlight and have some luck. Maybe an oil change would carry it out? To be honest, I'm not sure of what would be the easiest way to get it without opening the case(s). You have my condolences, by the way... I have a fear of doing exactly the same thing or worse, doing it & not realizing it until its too late. If you haven't done it, you might consider doing a doohickey replacement. The bottom of the abyss is the doohickey area. You might be able to kill two birds with one stone by finding the missing dowel & replacing the infamous dooh.
