I'm with you that it would not be a substitute, and would be way different, but with a little work, the little DL might be a pretty good alternative. I'm thinking in sort of a modern TransAlp sort of way -- smooth twin, long legs on the highway up to 80 or 90, middle- weight adventure-tourer. You're right, its belly is way too exposed. There's the front exhaust, the oil cooler and filter, and the engine bottom. To really adventure tour, it would need a skid plate and guards, maybe like the nerf bars, but a little easier on the eye. There are already good tire and luggage options. The power is good and the seat, fuel tank and alternator are acceptable. It would need a little better suspension, but that should be doable. But if all of that could be put together at 430 pounds for under $7,000 with TKC-80's, it might be pretty nice. You'd give up some on the single-track, but gain a lot on the highway. Actually, what it needs is a new frame. The VSTROM 650 uses the same basic frame as the VSTROM 1000, just with a smaller engine. That is why it is so heavy for what should be a small lightweight 650. Not to mention that a 90 degree V-2 makes that front header WAY too exposed. A narrower V-2 would make the bike taller, but get that front header out of the grass. There's just no way to make it reasonably useful on rutted washed out dirt-and-rock roads in the backcountry (like Forest Service roads in Arizona), in other words. It's a nice bike, but not for what I want my KLR for. -E

Toby just picked one up from Suzuki today for review in a future edition of DSN. Looking at it, the exhaust would last about two minutes, followed by a hole in the oil filter. If you reroute the exhaust, and put a bash plate on it, only then would I ride it on anything but a nice dirt road. Now if you could take that motor, and put it into a KLR type frame, with modern suspension and brakes, that would be a superb all-around D/S. I got some miles on the DL650 last weekend and think it is a great all around bike but agree that it is worlds away from being a dual sport at least for my needs. To my mind this type of bike is the modern equivalant of the old "standard" with a lot of versatility and comfortable ergos. The bike was really a pleasure to ride on a twisty road, I thought I would want more power but the bike is geared so well that I didn't miss it. I hope they sell a ton of them so that in a couple of years there is a good supply of used ones for me to choose from. Toby is headed this way tomorrow and I'm giving him a brief tour of some of the back roads in northern SLO county, maybe a little Hwy 1. the last 3 motorcycles i've seen broke down were H-D so i wondered do they make a Roadside FVR?
