I've been looking for some everyday riding pants, and the joe rocket ballistic 4.0 look reasonable to me. Anyone have any experience with this product, or recommend another? Keep in mind that if I could afford the aerostich products I would already own either the roadcrafter, or the darien stuff. Thanks, Mike McDowell

I was curious about your term "everyday pants". I'm using some Moose ballistic nylon riding pants in a gray/black color scheme that don't give you that Ricky Racer hot pink/dayglo orange look--more subtle. They have the hip pads and built-up material in the knees. They have room for knee/shin guards if you were so inclined, but I seldom use them. These pants are very inexpensive but quite durable and comfortable. I've seen them priced from $65 to $80. Though I don't use them as everyday pants, I always do for off road use. They're long enough to allow you to wear just hiking shoes and such without them looking like high-water britches, but they still fit inside MX- style boots comfortably. They don't look too funky that might cause some to be self-conscious going into a restaurant for breakfast before a day's ride. I searched through all of our suppliers and catalogs at the shop I used to work at before deciding on these and have been very happy with them. Also from a lazy man's perspective, the gray/black was excellent at not showing road or dirt grime on a month long trip I took in February. Thad Carey A15

I use mine every time I ride, great for commuting as they zip right over street clothes and boots. They give really good protection and are pretty well waterproof with the light amount of rain riding I've done on the short commute. They held up to a lowspeed slide without a scratch on them or me and the knee armoring works nicely. The only downside is that they don't breathe much at all due to being armored and well sealed for the weather. I wear shorts under them in anything warmer than 80F with any humidity at all. Generally I wind up with them completely saturated with sweat inside if it's hot and humid out. I don't find them to be any more odd looking than say a pair of heavy Carhart pants. They're plain black, pretty simple. Since they are overpants if I want them off I just take them off anyway.

I've had mine for about a year. I like them pretty well, for the price. They don't fit terrific, at least until they're broken in - my butt was always sore after about 75 miles at first, but now they seem pretty comfortable. And I would agree that they're pretty waterproof. I've ridden 50 miles in a medium-to-heavy rain and had no moisture get inside. My biggest gripe is that both zipper tabs broke off (and I haven't found a suitable fix, so I'm wearing my fingers out pulling on the miniscule remainder of the tabs). Also, the liners inside the zippers occasionally get caught in the zippers and jam/tear. But those are pretty minor problems - overall, I like them! I have those same pants. Comfortable(for something worn over boots/street clothes) and they are easy off/on. Good value as things go. I am looking at some lighter weight MX pants that I can just wear without all the layers. --- Chris wrote:

Thanks to all who posted their experiences with the Joe Rocket ballistic 4.0 pants. I went to my local dealer today to look at them. Unfortunately they didn't have my size (short inseam) in stock so I ordered a pair from newenough.com $118.00 plus shipping. I always try to buy first from this dealer, DGY Motorsports in the Chicago area because they stock a ton of bikes and accessories. Plus friendly service etc. Mike McDowell

My .02 for newenough.com, they couldn't be nicer and they are the first place I look for gear to wear. Prices are decent and the service is fantastic. I'm guessing it's a family operation, they send you a personal email with every order confirmation and you get a real live human if you call for any service issues or questions. Great vendor. I got my JR pants and my Oxtar Matrix boots from them.

Andy if you are worried about your KLr being rough, find a KTM dealer. Ride your KLR to the KTM dealer take a demo ride on an Adventure 640. Then go back out and ride your KLR. Your KLR will seem like a very smooth cycle at that point. Seriously the KTM 640 Adventure is a tight powerful dualsport but my oh my what a paint shaker. I thought it was going to leave the mirrors at stoplights. Jim
