gas tank: ims or dual star
I'm ready to take the plunge and buy the plastic translucent gas
tank. Which is the better one to get, IMS or Dual-Star for the
military KLR? The Dual-Star requires you to buy another gas cap, not
sure why.. Any one with a dual star tank cares to comment on
his/hers?
THANKS!

No, you use the old one from your factory tank.> -----Original Message----- > From: RS [mailto:captive@...] > Subject: Re: RE: [DSN_klr650] Gas tank: IMS or Dual Star > > The Dual Star tank is from IMS. Yes, it is a screw-on> And I guess the gas cap is a plastic screw on affair?
It is the vent line for the tank.> And what's this about a fuel line coming out of the gas cap?
Low to mid $200 range, w/ fuel cap. http://www.4strokesonly.com/IMSKaw.html has them for $199 w/o shipping and cap, but call them and make sure.>Finally, how much does it cost?
You need to call them for costs.> I went to the IMS website but did not see a price.
Check this link for instructions - http://imsproducts.com/instructions/113121.htm> Lastly... (sorry for all the questions), how easy is it to install? I've > removed the gas tank, so I'm not a total idiot.

FYI... That's not the bigass military tank, it's the smaller direct replacement for the OEM tank (i.e. it uses the OEM tank shrouds). Ok--here is what I got and where you can look at it. Hope this
clears up some confusion.
I got my translucent white 6.6 gallon tank from Dual
Star---------I put over 6.9 gallons in it---I stretch it a bit and just
call it 7.
I had to buy a gas cap from them at an additional cost---as
there is no way a stock cap will fit on there--no way---whole different
deal.
This tank does not accept the stock tank shrouds and the tank is
the shroud--and extends forward just as the stock shrouds did. You can't
use the stock shrouds with this tank.
I was told it was the military tank----there were other color
options----I want to see my gas--and don't give a rats a__ what it looks
like.
Do I like it-----oh yea big daddy !!! Arrggghhh Argghhhhhh
Argghhh (Tim Allen grunt).
You can see it at the link below.

You can't use the OEM cap on the KLR650 IMS tank period!
The IMS cap is a screw on & is used to vent the tank through a vent
hose. The OEM cap is completely different.

The sealer option is NOT needed, and it adds weight and reduces capacity.
Before you order direct from IMS, compare the pricing to $199, incl gas cap,
from http://www.4strokesonly.com http://www.4strokesonly.com/>

I use the translucent IMS myself, so I do speak from experience. I like it
A LOT.

Mike,
Thanks a lot for that link to:
http://www.finishlinewest.com/ims_tank_plus.htm
I guess I should order it from IMS directly as it's cheaper than Dual Star's
version. I want the military tank with the shrouds built in..
But what's this about:
This tank had the fluorinated option which keeps fuel from leaching through
the plastic.
As you can see from the pics the tank has also been Line-X'd which will also
seal the tank. Line-X is impervious to many liquids, one of them is gasoline
My whole point for getting this tank is so that I can see how much fuel is
in it and to get rid of the shrouds!!
Anyway, you've been a great help! thanks again

From the FAQ.................
Where can I get another fuel tank?
IMS makes a couple of different plastic replacement tanks for the
KLR: the 5.5 gallon, and the 6.6 gallon "military tank" (part
#113121, used on the USMC diesel KLR) which has the shrouds molded
in. Some people refer to this as a 7-gallon tank, but the volume
range is due to production variances. IMS may not list this tank on
their web site, but they will make it on special order. You can
specify any color they use. Black (B1) is supposedly best for sweat
resistance (the fuel's, not yours); there is also green (G2),
translucent green (G3), white (W1) and natural (N1). They also may
have a coating that prevents fuel sweating. Here's the kicker
(thanks to Walt Lensowich): When you get a military tank, you are
actually getting the commercial version of the military tank. The
bonafide military tank has a different gas cap with a check valve in
the vent to prevent leaks. The commercial version has a rubber
baffle. The cap sizes are different, and not interchangeable between
the two tanks. It appears that Dual Star is the only dealer that can
provide the true military fuel tank.

Does anyone have a Dual-Star tank bag laying around that they would
be willing to sell? I'm now thinking that I really need one for
the "big trip".
