suspension upgrade suggestions?

Post by raydon_12@yahoo.com » Fri Mar 19, 2004 9:54 am

Hi All, I"m new here, hope I do this right. My 2001 KLR650 A15 is almost paid for! Once I get the slip from the bank I can do what ever I want to it. I"m pretty happy with the stock bike except the suspension, especially the rear, seems pretty mushy to me. I'm a very active and muscular person and weigh 300lbs. I've adjusted the suspension as much as I can. I've been doing a lot of searching on the net and just am not finding much information. I'm not a mechanic by any stretch of the immagination so I'd probably have to have a local shop do the installation. I'd be grateful for any information or suggestions. Since I get the posts from the group in digest form, please feel free to e-mail me personally at raydon_12@.... Thank you Don Larson Staff Archaeologist, Rock Springs, Wyoming

Sounds like you're a good candidate for a shock spring change. Possibly a Progressive brand spring in a heavier rate would be a good addition. Maybe a poster with a similar weight issue can suggest the exact spring rate that worked for them or check with a good supplier like Arrowhead (Fred) for availability and spring recommendations. Perhaps he'll also have an appropriate recommendation for the rebound setting on your OEM shock you'll need to run after such a spring change. Thad Carey A15

In my humble opinion, new spring means new shock absorber too. Unless the original shock has a such a wide adjustment range that it can cope with a stronger spring (close to double the stiffness I guess). Or maybe the fluid in the shock can be changed for a more viscous one, but the damping will have to be increased by quite a lot JP Granger A12 Montreal -----Original Message----- From: thad_carey [mailto:ttcarey1@...] Sent: March 19, 2004 4:08 PM To: DSN_klr650@yahoogroups.com Subject: [DSN_klr650] Re: Suspension Upgrade Suggestions?

It is certainly a cost effective suspension upgrade IMHO. A 400 or 450# straight rate spring from eshocks.com would also probably work well, I think Devon has experimented with these. My suspension expert friends tell me that a straight rate spring is the best way to go on a rising rate suspension linkage like the KLR's. When I have the bike packed with camping gear my load is around 300#. I found the 500/560 spring to be too stiff for me although others have liked it. Kurt Grife

suspension upgrade suggestions?

Go to a shop that works on dirtbikes, and can service a shock absorber. You might need an adaptor for the shop's nitrogen valve to fit the KLR shock, I made one by buying an all-metal valve stem extender at Pep Boys and punching out the guts. Get a 550lb straight-rate spring from eshocks.com (9"x2.25"), and a set of progressive suspension LR-series springs for the forks. Have the shop service your shock, refilling it with 10w suspension fluid and mounting the heavy spring. They should also use 15w fork oil, and raise the level so it's 170mm from the top of the forks, with the springs out and the forks bottomed. Based on what a 240lb riding buddy did, and what I did (165lbs) this is my best guess for a 300lb rider. You might need bigger preload spacers in the forks than Progressive recommends. When I helped Chris change his springs (270?), we used 2.5" preload spacers instead of 2". Devon raydon_12@... wrote:

what parts do i need ??

Post by Stuart Mumford » Fri Mar 19, 2004 1:30 pm

Yo Scott, sorry for the lack of response... You probably won't need the gaskets. I reused my rotor bolt. The counter balancer upgrade is the "doohicky". What area are you in? I have the tools, I'm in Riverside CA.
