nyc parts?

Post by mlauerscott » Fri Mar 12, 2004 10:06 am

I had an unfortunate incident yesterday with a Toyota Camry in upper Manhattan. It was the typical oncoming driver decides to turn left, crossing the motorcyclists path of travel scenario. Fortunately it was at relatively low speed, and I escaped with relatively minor injury. The KLR on the other hand, sustained direct impact to the radiator, which was crushed along with the radiator shroud and lower left gas tank. Additionally, the front end appears to be out of whack upon initial inspection. Not sure yet how extensive that problem is going to be. Does anyone in the group know of any resources for cheap/used replacement KLR parts in or around the New York City region(or on the web)? Bike shop recommendations would also be invaluable. TIA Matt A12

A guy names (Carl?) Cephus somewhere in the city or close to it. I got a rim from him and spent a bit of time on the phone. Seems knowledgable, and supposedly called the "KLR King" I think he's a member either here or on the MADS list. I'm sure there are enough spares in the listening audience to be able to help you. The front end, unless something is really bent, is probably just out of alignment. Loosen the fork bolts, tweak it (front end) between a set of trees or signposts, and retighten them. Hopefully this is the only problem. If it's frame related, it's an insurance claim cause it's gonna cost you. I might have a full frame sunday (still looking good) so stay tuned. Let us all know. millerized --- In DSN_klr650@yahoogroups.com, "mlauerscott" wrote:

I think he's in Brooklyn someplace. As far a shops go... most all have bad reputations. Cycle Therapy on west 38th might be OK. They do have used parts as well. http://www.cycletherapynyc.com/ They are nice enough guys and have let me poke around in the attic looking for used parts before. Karl A14

Before you spend the big bucks on a new radiator (check the price at RonAyers.com), I'd send it to Myler's in Utah for repair. They specialize in motorcycle radiators, and they can straighten almost anything. 800-367-7699 I've used them for a severly damaged radiator that I was told locally could not be fixed, and they did a good job on it. I bought some stuff from Cephus as well, picked it up at his garage in East NY. Nice guy, more of a breaker/salvage parts guy than a place to have work done. DO NOT buy anything, or have your bike worked on by "NY Slick", in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. I have undone his handiwork on friends bikes on more than one occasion. You are warned. Devon Brooklyn

Matt, sorry to hear about your accident, glad you're ok. www.dual-star.com might have year 2000 knockoff gas tanks. Maybe check E-bay?
