Hi Listers,
I'm a beginning rider looking for my first bike, and am pretty set on
a KLR 650. So I found a bike in my area, it's a 2001 with low milage
for a really good price. It's not the best cosmetically (heavy sun
fade but I couldn't care less about that), but the owner said he
overtorqued the oil plug about a year ago and put in a helicoil
replacement. He said it holds just fine "besides the occasional drip
or two." The picture he sent appears to have a relatively fresh oil
spot directly under the bike. Of course I'd like to hear everyone say
"don't worry about it!" but, does anyone have experience using a
helicoil? Is it sound? Should I take a pass on this bike?
Thanks in advance,
Eric

helicoil oil plug
helicoils are sound, and the way oil dissapates once it hits the
asphalt results in a much larger spot , in other words a single drop
of oil will make a spot the size of a half dollar on the ground.
FWIW. A new crush washer might be all you need to stop the leak.
Ask him if you can check the threads before you buy, and at least he
was honest enough to tell you upfront about the helicoil.

helicoil oil plug
Go to your local NAPA store or the like and bring with you your old drain
plug. They sell oversized self tapping drain plugs. They work great.
They sell vehicle specific so you will need to get a parts person that
can do more than look things up in a computer, and they should be able to
help

I'm not sure that you would want to run an oversized self tapping drain plug into helicoil threads.
