Fellow Listers - Still trying to resurrect this neglected '89 that I just bought. Am currently having trouble removing the long swingarm bolt. I did get the nut off the bolt and now can turn the bolt with great effort. But I can't get the bolt to slide out at all. Have sprayed both ends liberally with penetrating oil and have hammered the h**l out of the bolt itself. All that hammering did was mushroom the threaded end of the bolt. Will likely have to replace it as a result. But can't replace it until I can get it out. Unfortunately, I do not have compressed air & impact wrench. Thanks in advance for any useful tips. A little trick I learned the hard way. Loosend and tighten that other big bolt down there. The motor mount one. This allows the frame to expand and then contract. Taking pressure off of the swingarm bolt. I found this out after I had the motor out of the frame for replacement. I can say that this was one of the hardest bolt removals. Mine was all pitted up but the bearing journals were ok. Heat from a propane torch can help. My prefered breaking lubricant is PB Blaster. --- In DSN_klr650@yahoogroups.com, thomas austin wrote:

Walt and Vansee - on your advice I tried loosening and then retightening and then loosening again the lower rear motor mount bolt - but to no avail. Swingarm bolt still won't budge. I've hit that bolt so hard that I've mushroomed the threaded end and if/when I eventually do get it loose, I'll have to file down the "mushroom" head just to get it all the way out. Vansee - you recommended a propane torch. What part of the bolt would you heat up? Thanks again. Paul p.s. I had a similar problem when I swapped engines in my '89 over Christmas break. After letting it sit for days in PB Blaster, heating with a torch, etc., it still wouldn't budge. I ended up grinding off the head of the bolt. I then stretched the frame with a bottle jack and cut the bolt between the frame and the swingarm on the left side. This allowed me to pull the swingarm out with the bolt still in it. I was then able to remove the bolt and the bearing sleeves (which were frozen to it) and I replaced them with new ones, along with the seals. Yep I did my motor swap in the kitchen. over Christmas break one year a ago. Took 2days to get that bolt out. I heated both ends staying away from the aliminium link. Sure the heat expanded the bolt but the cooling and contraction would break the weld in there. Mind you the motor was out at this time. The bolt would turn freely. My experience was different than Tengai Mark in that I put only the motor mount bolt in and tighnend it down.
