emissions

Post by goodoldrusty » Thu Feb 26, 2004 10:44 pm

Hello all, I bought an '04 KLR and have questions regarding emissions. I often brag to my cager friends that I get 50+ MPG. One commented recently about motorcycles being worse polluters than cars. Does anyone have info about this? I went to the EPA site and found info that says that motorcyles create 90% more emissions than SUVs. When I emailed Kawasaki asking if this was true, and if they had more info, I got this response: "Thank you for contacting Kawasaki Motors Corp., U.S.A. Unfortunately, the information you have requested is not available." I'm going to keep riding no matter what, but it makes gloating about gas mileage a little difficult if I'm polluting more than a Cadillac "SUV".

My apologies if this posts twice... I often brag to my cager friends about getting 50+ mpg. One of these friends recently called me out by saying that motorcycles cause more pollution via emissions than cars. I looked into it by going to the EPA website. The EPA says that motorcycles produce 90% more emissions than SUVs. I emailed Kawasaki about this. I asked if it's true, and how much better late models are than older ones (I have an '80 KZ 440, and a '04 KLR 650). Kawasaki's respose was: "Thank you for contacting Kawasaki Motors Corp., U.S.A. Unfortunately, the information you have requested in not available." Does anyone have further info on this, or links to more info? My boasting about getting better gas mileage has kinda lost steam.

that might be true for 2 strokes. Or if considered on a gallon basis (ie pollution per gallon consumed). But I have a real hard time understanding how an SUV consuming 4 times more gas (and using more oil, which needs to be processed) and requiring much more resources to build could be considered user friendly when compared to a bike. Not a scientific statement, more like common sense.

Mark, I would suggest to you and other listers, paying a visit to http://www.topografix.com/ I have used the expert version which costs a few bux but allows me to load my etrex with info and upload data from the etrex up onto the pc. the software allows you to switch between countinous tiles of topo maps and aerial photos. I use this less and less as my GIS aptitude and data base becomes more adept. For instance on my pc's I have the entire state of massachusetts topo map in one image, its a sid file, courtesy of the state government.I also have all of southeastern mass in high res color orthophotos that i use for work but started looking up old trails i rode as a kid and finding other trails that are still out there ready to explore. Anyway, if anyone googles "GIS data" and the name of their state there is an excellent shot that a ton of info is available for free or close to it. learning how to utilize it can be a bit of a struggle at first, though. GIS is the greatest thing and also part of the end of the free world, if it isn't dead already, but I digress. Anyway the only major flaw on the topographix stuff and they do have a freeware version, is that the software will be pulling tiles off the net as you scroll around or zoom in. If you are on dialup this could be a painful experience. The work around for a KLRlister on dialup would be to get someone with broadband to suck up all the tiles of the area of interest, burn it to CD(s) and then the user would load the tiles onto the harddrive in the appropriate folder remember sneakernet ? Check out that website I think someone here would be well pleased with it. Andy A18 650 sMILES --- In DSN_klr650@yahoogroups.com, "Mark Lewis" wrote:
