Another thing to check is the cat and air pump. A good cat getting enough air should be able to clean up all but the worst emissions problems. Not sure how the cat will stand up to 110k miles/20 years, but if it's shot, you might be able to find an aftermarket replacement for circa $150 (try summit racing for generics, or a VW supply catalog might have them). There is also a bottle of "cat cleaner" that you can pour in your gas... They refund the price if you don't pass (and everything else is OK). If you can find the specs, you should be able to test the air pump. (Would be xxx psi at yyy rpm.) If the pump is OK, look for any kind of air control valve that controls the flow between the air pump and the cat. If there is one, just bypass it with a hose from the air pump to the cat. If the cat is good and the pump or valve is bad, you could try to find an electric air pump from a C5 corvette and wire it on full time for the test. This is popular amongst 3rd generation RX-7 owners with engine mods. Oh, and dump a huge amount of drygas into the tank. Make sure you get the engine nice and hot before the test, too. (I know, that can be a little hard to do in the winter.) Krokko -- Dr. J.
