buzz in the dash area - now it's gone

Greetings! I just bought a new 2004 KLR650 last week ($4178 + tax etc.) While I read the info off the VIN to my insurance agent before riding off the showroom floor I noticed it said "Made in Thailand" on the frame mounted VIN sticker...(at least the engine still says "Made in Japan"). Went for a ride w/ a friend today, his '98 says on the VIN sticker "Made in Japan". What year did they start assembly in Thailand???

Welcome! I think they started in '01, so it was the '02 model year bikes. My A15 ('01 model year) says "Made in Japan". For whatever it's worth the Thai assembled bikes seem to have no more or less assembly mistakes or shortcomings than the Japanese assembled bikes. Congratulations on your purchase. There are some great deals on used bikes out there but for once I wanted something with no DPO issues (Dipsh*t Previous Owner), and I'm sure you will enjoy this aspect of a new machine. You should buy your first KLR accessory as soon as possible- A tube of blue "medium" loctite. Use it on the bodywork screws and anything accessible. There's a list of minor things to check, but for the moment just enjoy riding the thing around. Someone awhile back posted the same problem I have been having for the last few weeks, a buzzing noise that seems to come from the dash area. I heard it only when under way and when the rpms were at about 2.5 - 3K. Well tonight I'd had enough. I pulled off the windscreen, headlight cover, wire connector cover, fairing and instrument cluster to find the beast. I inspected and tightened every screw and bolt (none real loose) and pulled out the speedo cable for cleaning and greasing. I also shot a little dab of wd40 into my ignition switch. When I put it all back together the buzz was gone. Now I can't be certain what it was but I'm betting it was the speedo cable. I suppose you can try the ignition switch first but if it's been a while since servicing the cable pull it out, clean it, shoot some WD into the housing, grease the cable and reinstall.
