I've been contemplating a set of Metzeler Sahara's. How much mileage have you gotten out of them? How well do they grip on pavement? How do they do in mud? Do they make a lot of noise? Anyway, www.froogle.com works pretty good for finding online prices, and http://www.tiresunlimited.com/metzeler_enduro_3.htm is one vendor who lists them. Don't know who's saying the tire is discontinued. It may be, but the Metzeler website is still showing it as available: http://www.metzelermoto.com/product_info/catalogo/scheda.asp?ID=197&idCat=16 If you were happy with the Sahara 3's off road performance you might try the IRC GP110. If you want something a little better n the dirt, you might try the IRC GP1. If you want something more street oriented you might try the Pirelli MT70 - not as good as the Sahara in the loose stuff, better in the hard/rocky stuff and light-years better on the street. ride report aka brother's last ride and klr voltmeter idea

Post by bmrbill » Tue Feb 03, 2004 10:59 pm

Hey Mike, I mentioned this a couple of years ago when I first built it. The schematic comes from "The Encyclopedia of Electronic Circuits, Vol. 1" ISBN 0-8306-0938-5. Page 99. It is built around an LM3914 LED bargraph driver. I used individual (round) LEDs, and stuffed the whole thing into a 35mm film canister. I drilled 10 holes in the bottom of the film canister. One for each LED. I chose the 7 o:clock position for the 11 volt LED, going clockwise in 0.5 volt increments. I used red LEDs for the 11, 11.5, 12, 15, and 15.5 volt positions. The other 5 LEDs are green. I plugged it into the "city lights" connector, and stuck it to the curve just above, and a little to the right of, the temp gauge. You know the place. By putting it in that curve, I was able to use two pieces of double sided tape. It's still holding. As for getting the 0.5 steps and the 11-15.5 volt range just right, I used two 10K pots of the 10 turn variety. I had to play with them both to get the range and steps I was looking for. I should point out that I'm an electronics tech, and have access to variable power supplies and calibrated voltmeters. After I got it just the way I wanted, I filled the film canister with a non-corrosive RTV. I didn't fill it completely, so I can still access the two 10K pots if the thing ever drifts too far out of adjustment. When I run my 100W high beam and my electric vest, I can watch the system discharge. Oh, I should also note that in direct sunlight, like coming over my shoulder, I can't see the LEDs. However, that doesn't matter to me. Almost 20,000 miles later, I know the personality of my charging system pretty well. That was the whole idea.
