minimizing spares: can you use a front tube in the rear tire?
I'm working on refining my packing list for my trip from NYC to South
America on my KLR 650.
Question is:
- Can you use the front inner tube in the rear tire?
This wouldn't be for thousands of miles, but to get you along till you
can patch the original rear tube, or get a replacement rear tube.
Tried searching for this in the list search functions, but I kept
getting "The list DSN_klr650 is temporarily unavailable". When it did
work I would have to keep hitting previous to search only a small
sub-section of the list archives. The www.listquest.com address in
the KLR650 mailing List FAQ seems to be gone.
Is there any other places to search the KLR650 list archives?

I only used a new front tube in the rear one time and it lasted 50 miles or
so. Now I take both sizes.

The idea is to carry the front tube as a spare for both. I carry a tube
repair kit for small -simple - clean punctures. A longer nail will chew up a
lot of the tube near the rim strap though. I never regret carrying a repair
kit and a front tube. I would air up the rear tire to be pretty firm though
if I put the 21 in it. I don't want the folds to start moving around.
My spare is a Moose HD 21". It will not fit in a fender bag easily. Usually
people take a standard 21' tube as a spare.

In an emergency this will work. Dualsport riders do this all the
time. However-------I left mine in too long and the tube blew at
speed----it was a nasty ride in which I almost high sided-------which is
a terrible thing to do. If I do it again-----I will proceed with much
caution and a lower speed until I can make a better repair.

Using a front tube in the rear is just a trail rider's dodge to get
you out of the woods. On a typical trail ride, you might never go
over 40, and are probably within 50 miles of your truck. Fine if
you want to travel light. If you are on enough of a tour to be
carrying luggage, you ought to be able to find room for two tubes,
and a patch kit.

Man, that's straight-up racist. I like a good racist joke (especially one about white people) but that's not even funny. Japanese doctors doing germ warfare research during WW2 referred to Chinese, Thais, etc (basically any non-Japanese Asians) as "monkeys" or "logs. My '01 was assembles in Japan, and has all the same loose ill-machined sh*t as any other bike people bitch about here. Not to mention using something that resembles vasoline to grease all the rear suspension bearings. So no, the Thai's don't assemble a KLR any worse then the Japanese did. -- Devon Brooklyn, NY A15-Z '01 KLR650 '81 SR500 cafe racer "The truth's not too popular these days....."
