Hi all, I am a bit dissapointed in the oil-consumption of my KLR. Bought a KLR650 built 98 with 4000 km last year. Has now around 8000 km. Always use semi-synthetic 10W40 and refill with bike upright against wall till oil level is just above max-marker. Found that the bike uses around 650-700ml on 1000 km (mixed conditions: country road, highway). I find this quite a lot. I plan to do longer trips (Nord Cape next june , Panamericana year after), and think it is quite annoying to carry 2 litres of extra oil. Was the bike not been broken in properly ? Will it get better with more mileage on the engine ? Any hints, tips greatly appreciated...! Gijs.

My thoughts? No, the bike was not broken in properly. Or at least not taken care of. I would hate having a bike consuming that much oil. I would pull the head, rering it, and do a valve job. Then you could ride it for a damn long time with no worry's. MrMoose A8 (Barbie and Ken special)

Gijs, My unscientific and opinionated observations and experiences about KLR oil consumption: - At sustained operations above 5000 rpm the KLR will consume oil more rapidly (900ml in 800km has been the worst for me sustained operations at 5500 - 5700 rpm) - Synthetic oil is consumed more rapidly than conventional oil - Heavier weight oil is not consumed as rapidly as thinner oil - Mobil Delvac 1300 Super tends to be consumed very quickly on my bike when compared with other conventional and synthetic oils (no clue on this one) - There has been no difference in consumption when using motorcycle specific oils vs. automotive oils. I have tried the same brand and weight just for fun (Mobil 1). I do not think you are going to be able to tell if the bike was properly broken in (the list just had a big debate on this issue). Maintenance or a lack of maintenance by the previous owner will probably be your only clue of how it was treated. I purchased my bike new and followed the break-in procedures recommended by Kawasaki and I still have an oil burner when operating at high rpm for extended periods. From reading different post about this issue over the years it seems some bikes like to burn oil while others do not. Could this be another KLR idiosyncrasy that can be attributable to Kawasaki s tight tolerance standards? For the record I have an A14 with 20k on the odometer. Oil consumption has been an issue for me since the 500 mile mark (when you can exceeded 5000 rpm). I've never known any internal combustion engine that did not use more oil at high RPMs. Just a byproduct of technology. All piston engines have some blow by at the rings, and high rpms exasperate the problem, IMHO. I was coming off one freeway on to another. I started to accelerate (hard) like I always do (wannabe racer). Then I heard and felt somethin, I instantly grabed the clutch lever. I Thought I ran over something in the road even though I pay attenetion and didn't see anything. I didn't feel anything wrong so I let out the clutch. Then I heard all sorts of grinding and banging than the rear wheel locked up. I was lucky I was going straight or I may have dumped it. I again grabed the clutch and coasted to the side of the road.
