1st oil change/cleaning oil strainer

Post by Edmund Rowe » Thu Oct 09, 2003 11:46 pm

I have a new 2003 A17 KLR 650 with 200 miles on it. I m planning on changing the oil, cleaning the oil strainer, and installing a magnetic oil plug. This is NOT a substitue for the 500 mile service. Thanks to my newly arrived Clymer manual I m looking at chapter 6 pages 137-138 on the procedure for opening up the right crankcase cover and accessing the oil strainer. The procedure seems pretty straightforward. I don t think the coolant needs replacing yet, so I ll skip that part of the procedure. Also, the cover gasket should not need replacing (I hope). I m planning on getting some molybdenum disulfide grease. I have metric tools and torque wrenches and loctite for the reassembly. Also a rubber mallet for tapping the cover should it not come off easily. Am I missing anything? Any pitfalls on this procedure I ought to watch out for? The Clymer is much easier to read than the factory service manuals! Edmund [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

You don't have a choice. The impeller has to come off to get the clutch cover off, so you'll be draining the coolant. Save it in a clean container and reuse it.

I was able to reuse mine.

Yes, you have to unscrew the impeller from the water pump shaft as if it were a nut, and very gently. If you just pull it off, the threads on the shaft will ruin the oil gasket. Screw it back too. -- Devon Brooklyn, NY A15-Z '01 KLR650 '81 SR500 cafe racer "The truth's not too popular these days....." Arnold Schwarzenneger, in The Running Man

Well, Don, just take $200 in walking around money, a couple of credit cards, and either a bottle opener or a shot glass. This sentiment reflects the "less stuff, more money" approach. Or you can check to see what SVT took on an Alcan trip... http://www.advrider.com/Wisdom/Gear.html That's a good well reasoned approach. Good luck, MarkB
