dual star led tail light

Hey Fellow Thumpers, I just installed the new LED tail light from dual star and it works as advertised! It is A LOT brighter and people do stop further behind you when that thing goes off. And since I do a fair amount of street riding in LA with too many people being distracted while driving, it's well worth the money. Philip

Well I added a $7.98 dual element LED clearance light from Walmart under the rack and just about the taillight and wired it up to the brake light. Works fine, should have added two in afterthought, one on each side of the rack for even more announcement when the brake light comes on. Dooden (Cheap-O) A15 Green Ape

Maybe I am off key here, the price seems a little high. How hard could it be to put some High output LED's on a circuit board and drill some holes in the board to mount it. Does it do anything special other than being bright and low current draw? Kurt Thomas 1996 KLR650 Virginia Beach, VA [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

You forgot Kurt that it's a DUAL-STAR EXCLUSIVE!!! I like their products, but their marketing and pricing cracks me up. It only took them 2 years to reduce the price of the water pump seal from $35 to $13 (RA has them for $8), and to remove the "DUAL-STAR EXCLUSIVE" statement from their bash-plate product page (it's a bog-standard Utah Sport Cycles plate, AFAICT). I wonder where we could get our hands on the LED's that those Tractor-Trailer rigs now have. I bet those guys bust them up a lot while loading cargo, so they? might? Be easy to get? Well, now I have something to do this weekend. Kurt Thomas 1996 KLR650 Virginia Beach, VA [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

Considering that non-flashing 8-LED add-on units that you have to wire up yourself on the exterior of your bike are over 40 bucks a pop, the Dual-Star price doesn't seem out of line. The cheapest flashing add-on I've seen is $56.00. For 8 dollars more, the Dual- Star unit is plug and play, with an interior mount. __Arden

There are alternatives. The DualStar assembly uses 18 LED's. I use the Ledtronics direct replacement units: https://www.netdisty.net/ds/aut1157/default.asp They use 24 super bright LED's. Nine of which are oriented around the circumference of the "bulb". They are aimed at the taillight reflector. The result is that besides a very intense light output directly to the rear, there is also ambient light directed out at wide angles like with the original bulb. I find that the Ledtronics unit is much brighter than the original bulb. It costs $37.50. If you get one, don't get the "motorcycle" style. That has white LED's in the circumference which are intended to provide license plate lighting. On the KLR, the completely red LED units work better. Just for information purposes, my bike is completely converted to LED's, with the exception of the headlight. My rear turnsignals are also brake lights. That gives me three brake/tail lights. Each of which is brighter that the original. I have no affilitation with Ledtronics. Ron

Did you replace the instrument cluster bulbs as well? I run LEDs to light the instrument cluster, but I haven't found any that are nearly as bright as stock. -Lujo planetequipment wrote:

Oh man, thanks for that link! I was pondering what to do as a dash illuminator for my cycle computer among other flotsam I wind up adding on. Their main link page has a myriad of instrument panel lights that would do the trick. Now I can know my proper speed at night too ;-).
