paint match
Well, I learned how not to go up a steep hill and now I am looking
for a good paint match for my A 17 front fender. I found the frame
paint match in the FAQ, but nothing pertaining to plastic. Do any of
you know a paint that will work.
Thanks,
Dan B.

Dan I don't think you can paint the plastic----it just won't stick for
long.

Dan- You may want to try Krylon's new "Fusion" rattle can technology
plastic paint. I know I'm going to give it a shot in a couple of weeks
when I'm back with the bike (which is now 500 miles away). I'm going
to experiemnt on the underside of a panel to see if it'll bond. I'd
like to change the A9 malibu barbie color combo to something
else......anything else:)
If you beat me to it, I'd love to hear your findings.

The word on the Fusion paint from a stunt club guy I know is, it works
great on the lowers, but you can't get gasoline anywhere near it,
evidently it dissolves it quite handily.

I've already applied Krylon Fusion to some plastic parts. Both were front fenders, one a UFO "superbike" and the other a 79 XT500. While they were both plastic, the UFO seems more like the polyethelene(?) that Kawasaki is using on the KLRs.
All that is necessary is to have the part clean, and spray it. Clean means wiped down with a solvent first. I tried single and multiple coat applications, and it sticks! It can be bent and twisted without cracking and peeling. The bad news is that if it gets a whiff of solvent, it comes off(even after a week of curing).
These same parts were later scuffed with scotchbrite, primed with a rattlecan lacquer primer, and sprayed with rustoleum. It seemed to stick just as well as Fusion, didn't peel or crack after curing, and was much less affected by gasoline.
Avoid metallic rattlecan paints as they don't hold up to solvent either. Ace Hardware paint doesn't either...

You have to be able to paint plastic. Many cars / car parts are plastic. Automotive paint supply stores sell additives to promote adhession and flex to allow plastic to be painted. Also remember painting is a mechanical bond. Make shure you shuff every inch of the work piece as where it is not scuffed it will let go. Keith> long. > > Mark Sampson

newbie from tucson still needs advice
Thanks for your quick response Devon and EJ,
I mean to change the coolant first thing tomorrow. My current
settings on the Mikuni VM38, same thing as Devon had, 35 pilot, 280
main, and 6F8 needle. And I'm geeting 53 mpg with these settings. Do
you think that I need to change them?
But I'm still wondering about the stripped thread. It's not the PO
that screwed up the thread, it was I. I must have over-thightened the
drain plug last time I changed the oil. Part of the blame, though I'm
not sure, may be the fact that the drain plug that my bike has now is
steel. Using a steel nut on an aluminum crankcase does not seem right
to me... Anyway, I discovered that my thread was messed up in
Flagstff and had to cluge a solution. Luckyly (or maybe very
unlucklily) it's the very top of the thread that's gone. I beefed-up
the very end of the nut (ie near the head) using teflon tape. And I
rode back to Tucson. After 450 miles there's no oil leak however I
don't know if the plug could be made to stay up next time I change
the oil. Plus I'm worried about loose threads messing up the engine.
So pray tell me: Is there any sense in trying to get the drain re-
threaded without taking the bike apart?
