ktm 640 adventure bike

Hey all i still haven't purchased my KLR yet because its not in but when i was browsing through my local dealers shop i ran accross a KTM 640 adventurt he says it would smoke the KLR on road or off and the suspension is much better. anyone heard anything about this KTM model? MATT

He's probably right. KTMs are awesome bikes IMHO and more dirt oriented than the KLR. However, they are much more expensive to buy and maintain, and all reports are that finding parts is extremely difficult even in big cities, so good luck if you break down on a long trip. Paul A16 01 M750D SF, CA

I dont like the KTM's. The old ones (1996) was too extreme and needed constant TLC to keep running. Dont know about the newer ones but they still seem a bit like "race gear", not the type of bike you ride everyday and just put in the shed over night. And yes, the KTM would smoke the KLR. All that extra cash have to buy you something, and a lot of extra it, is in Sweden the price diff is $3700USD. I paid $6200USD for my Kaw. First noticeable difference is the seat height -- the KTM sits a good 2-3" higher than a KLR. I have a 32" inseam and can just barely get both tiptoes on the ground. Dealer support is going to be iffy unless you live in a big dirt biking area, but for the most part you'll find that KTM dealers are also dirt biking enthusiasts and provide top notch service. KTM's claim to fame is that the 640 Adventure is basically the 650 race bike with DOT equipment - by extending the radiator shrouds along the side of the plastic gas tank they got DOT signoff on the plastic tank. Makes the bike a real performer, but it also means you need to maintain it like it was a race bike. Because it is a race bike, made from some of the best parts, replacement parts are expensive. The better off road suspension becomes overly stiff for extended road riding and the seat is on the firm side. For my own tastes, the KTM is to dirt oriented to be a fun street bike and while its not a problem to get the suspension retuned for the street it kind of negates the bikes dirt worthiness, which is the real reason to get one. In the real world, until you start haunting single track trails the KTM's superior performance advantage isn't all that noticeable. The KTM Adventure is everything the KLR should be. It has way more power, has the best of everthing in terms of hardware and has awesome suspension and brakes. The newer bikes are quite reliable if maintained. They do require more maintenance (valve adjustments etc.) than the KLR. They are also way more sexy, I think they are very good looking bike. I want one, but then I realize it is almost twice the price of the KLR. Is it twice the bike? Yes and no. Can it kick the KLR on the dirt and street? Absolutely. If you need the extra performance the bike is worth it. You could never get that level of performance out of a KLR. If you don't need it, it isn't worth the price. I want the Japs to build a KTM Adventure beater for Jap bike prices. Currently, there is no other bike on the market that compares to the Adventure. Bryan K A14

Yes, great bikes. But if you can do multiple 5-700 mile days on the KTM as many of us have done on KLR's you're a better man than me. The level of vibration is just too high for me on the KTM. Kurt Grife [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

From the little chatter I have heard: Don't break it, parts can be a looooooooong time coming for KTM's. Unlike a KLR hell you can buy most things on eBay for a KLR. Dooden A15 Green Ape

I talked to a salesman that said the 640 will walk across the floor on the centerstand while idleing on the display floor! Rod

A lot of Triumphs will do that. I have read about KTM vibration, but never found it oppressive on the couple of examples I have ridden. The two guys I know with AdvwntureR s ride them cross-country without complaint, except for the way they eat sprockets.
