My new 2003 KLR's sub frame has bent/twisted I have been riding on
the street mostly and 200 miles on fsr's. For a total of 1000 miles.
Now I have not let the dealer do the 800 mile first service because
the manual only stated that they should do spoke tension and steering
head adjustments. All other procedures can be done by the consumer.
Which is me. The dealer is trying to tell me that because they didn't
do the initial break-in service that the warranty is not valid. I say
the sub frame was crooked from day one or was inherently weak from
the start. I would not have noticed it except for the fact that I did
a few miles on the road with a buddy and he said the my rear fender
wasn't lined up with my rear tire. At first I thought he was off his
rocker but when I got home and put the bike on axle stands, stood at
the back and whoa it was true the back fender was crooked by about a
half inch. Any words of wisdom?

They can't void your warranty for not having gone to them for the service, your warranty is protected from this idiocy by the Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975. I can't find a copy of it on the FTC website, but perhaps your local Better Business Bureau can help you out. Regardless you should file a complaint with the BBB and with BigK as well. bent subframe and warranty
Thanks very much for the support. I spoke with the service manager today and
he did quite alot of back peddling. I did how ever allow them to schedule an
appointment for steering head adjustment and spokes. He also said that the
bent sub-frame would be covered as there is no damage anywhere else on the
bike. Thanks again for the answers and support.

African or European KLR?
Yo Glen! If you're going to ride back and forth across Kansas and want to milk all the miles out of your KLR possible, go 16 tooth, but I reckon stock gearing is best all around. The KLR isn't exactly King of the Salt Flats, ya know.
