I know this should probably be a poll. Anyway, if you were riding just highway miles (55/60 mph). What would most folks consider an average day? I know some folks are tougher than others and each persons endurance varies. The reason I ask is I'm still looking for a KLR and need to consider how many days it will take to ride it home depending on the mileage traveled per day. To get a feel for where I sit for endurance. I can usually ride 700 miles per day or about 17 hours on the ST1100 with minor discomfort. I'm not expecting to ride the KLR that sort of highway distance in a day. I'm assuming about half that mileage (350 miles) per day would be pushing the comfort level with a stock seat. Anyone have any input on reasonable daily mileage? The total distance was around 800 miles. It was on the stock seat (which had around 20,000 miles on it at that time), but I had a couple of beach towels over it. It was initially (first 30 minutes) slightly less comfortable than just the stock seat, but didn't get any worse after that. I basically rode from fuel stop to fuel stop, with a 30 minute lunch break. At the end of the day, there was no monkey butt, and the only reason I stopped was because I got where I was going. That was mostly at around 70 MPH actual (77 indicated, or about 5100 RPM) for 13.5 hours. It would've been shorter, but I hit some road construction in New Mexico... -- Cloyce A13 in Austin

If you're not used to it I think the most tiring part will be the buffeting, which will certainly be much stronger than on the ST. I suggest taking it easy (i.e., frequent rest or a short first day) until you figure out how to be comfortable despite the wind pushing at you. After that, the distance you can go will probably be limited only by how often you'll have to stop to give your butt a break, and that varies greatly from person to person. I've done a bunch of 500 mile days (by which I mean 250 miles of highway to get somewhere by late morning, spending the day there, and then 250 miles in the evening to get back home) and I didn't find them too painful, even with the stock seat. -Lujo Curtis Spivey wrote:

If I'm going for a leisurely ride I mostly do 300 mile days. If I'm trying to make tracks I get a 500-600 mile day. If I absolutely, positively have to be there I can deal with several 700-800 mile days. Just yesterday pulled a 500 mile loop with a 10 AM start that got me home at 8 PM, and I even spent a couple hours wandering around the Manzanar Relocation Center - its my annual 4th of July weekend ride in remembrance of one of our uglier national sins. 400 to 500 mile days are no problem but I cruise 75 - 80. I have done 650 miles in a day. A friend has done 780 miles. He has a sheep skin lined seat and I have a Corbin with some sheep skin. Criswell Curtis Spivey wrote:

The longest days I've done were mixed trail rides. Last year's Pine Hill enduro, I rode 100mi of highway, did the 90 mile enduro, then rode home 100 miles. Mark's last PA ride, Lujo and I did the 110-odd miles of fire roads and jeep trails, then rode home 240mi. It was nearly 10 hours time on the bike that day, I was still pretty comfortable when I got home. About 900km over about 11 hours for a routine intercapital cruise was not unusual for me. The small 600 tank made for frequent stops and lowered the average speed. Not a such a bad thing since my arse was ready for a break after about 180km anyway.

The best I managed was about 1500km over about 16 to 17 hours. Back then I was younger, crazier and slimmer so the upholstered plank of a seat was not quite so bad. Mister_T Melbourne Australia

I haven't racked up big mileage in a day, probably 450 at most, but I have spent 12 hours in the saddle, mostly on dirt roads. My butt gets sore on the stock seat, but not sore enough to call a premature end to a good day of exploring.
