Hope someone out there can give me a little insight on this. Just
talked my best friend into buying a '91 klr 650. Bike only has 3800
miles and seems to be in pretty good overall shape. Bought from
local Kaw dealer. the problem is when you hit the throttle hard there
is a knock, knock, knock in the engine. This only last for a few
seconds and then seems to go away. It happens only on hard throttle.
it happpens both when you are just revving up the engine at
standstill or accelerating. Not sure if "knock" is a good
description of the noise or not. Took back to dealer and he said
this is somewhat of a trait of a big single. He also said it could
be coming from the clutch basket. {I have a DR650 and it does not
have this noise} The bike runs great other than this. When under
steady throttle it just purrs along. Is this something to be
concerned about? Would appreciate your thoughts.

knock in engine
John,
Have you checked tha balancer system? This bike has all the bad parts
in the system, springs and pins driving the balancer system and thru
this the waterpump. The balancer chain may be loose, too, as lots of
times the lever has crimped around the bolt, the spring has no
tension. Also has the early clutch gearbox system.
All is easy to fix - it's a KLR

knock in engine
I just asked about that same noise a couple of weeks ago. I too
heard that loud knock when I bought my 94 KLR with 9800 miles on it.
It was in very good condition, taken care of by a mature man, and it
ran very well. It is totally NORMAL. I hear that same noise on my
friends bike and another friend that had one for 3 years said he
remembers his doing the same thing.
To clarify what noise I am talking about:
It is a very distinct knock (not a ping or tick) heard low in the
motor. It happens when you just blip the throttle, (about 2 or 3
knocks) or if you are just cruising along and whack open the throttle
you can hear it for the next second or two. You can really hear it
loud and clear when leaving a stop sign or red light as you feather
out the clutch and are not giving it alot of gas.
Mine has done it no matter what adjustments I make to the carb, no
matter what octane fuel I put in it, and it has done it for over 3000
miles now after putting in a new doohicky and spring. My bike still
runs great while flogging it all day long on twisty back roads.

Yup... I agree with the description of the "knock." I've had that
very slight irritation since I bought my KLR 2 years ago at just under
5k miles. I have over 25k on it now and the exact same "knock" is
still there. I'm not worried about it.

brake fluid .. dot 3 ?
I don't think there is any problem mixing 3 and 4. It is only the 5 (silicon based I think) you have to worry about.
