Like most things...they're a compromise. I actually wanted something more like a full MX boot. The only problem, as this list pointed out, is an MX sole can be a bit slippery on the street. And if traction is important than the choices are significantly narrowed. That, combined with a non-existant local inventory makes the search even more difficult. I purchased the Discoveries sight unseen. Mainly because of reputation and Lujo's (fellow lister) experience. They have proven to be a very comfortable and quality product. Although I wasn't too concerned about appearance, I have to admit the Discoveries are a pretty good looking boot; especially by motorcycle boot standards. They require very little break-in and transmit good brake pedal and shift lever feel. The leather and worknamship are top quality. I expect this boot to last many years. It can be resoled and is supposedly waterproof. I got me a good aftermarket insole that I hope will help keep my dogs cool and dry in the summer heat. I think if I had to do it all over I'd buy this boot again. My only complaint is that it doesn't have a steel toe or ankle armor; just real thick leather. But once again, everything's a trade off. Have the "Donald Duckarians" considered buying pretty well anything that comes in a good box, throwing away the contents , and Duct taping the boxes to their great understandings ? DC

off season care (deltran and yuasa battery chargers)

Post by Marc Illsley Clarke » Thu Apr 10, 2003 3:17 pm

Devon, Yes, I am completely certain. I maintain my battery every month, whether I am using the bike or not. I always top off all cells to the maximum fill line with distilled water during monthly maintenance. It has been on one charger or the other since last fall (don't ask, please). I have even gone to the trouble of performing A/B tests, where I charge with the Yuasa one month and the Deltran the next. The Deltran Battery Tender definitely boils out the first cell. The Yuasa wall wart definitely does not boil out the first cell. The Deltran Battery Tender does work, but you will need to disconnect it -- you will boil the first cell dry if you leave it hooked up and charging. I found that the Deltran would lower the fluid level in the first cell to below the bottom fill line or below (not totally dry, but requiring refilling) in one month's charging. The Yuasa wall wart charger allows you to just leave the charger connected and forget about it. According to my records it lowered 4 cells by 1/16 of the distance from the maximum fill line to the minimum fill line in 1 month of charging. The other 2 cells were still at the maximum fill line. -- Marc, KLR650 A12, Loveland, CO USA Date: Thu, 10 Apr 2003 14:32:24 -0400 From: Devon Jarvis Subject: Re: RE: Off Season care Marc, Are you sure it's the battery tender? The first cell (closest to the drain hose) tends to lose electrolyte when you tip the bike over on that side. If you haven't dropped your bike since you last topped up then perhaps it is the charger. I have a "Battery Tender", which might be made by Deltran I'm not sure. Actually two of them, I've never had problems but I don't leave the battery plugged constantly every time I'm off the bike- If I've been using the heated grips and the vest at the same time in the city, I'll charge it about once a week. I put the charger on when I park before going in to work, when I get the bike to go home the charger is always finished by then. Devon A15 Marc Illsley Clarke wrote:
