Had fun in seriously slick snow and icy mud buzzing around in the hills. Iffin' you want to loose weight and get in shape, buy a dirt bike and get off the pavement. On Sunday, every muscle and joint between my knees and belt was sore and stiff. Felt like a dating teenager the first time his parents leave home for a weekend. Anyway, coming home Saturday-night/Sunday morning I was pulled over on a divided highway by a Newark City LEO -- utter excrement. Hell, that 250cc bike barely does 70 MPH down hill. At least he didn't attempt to say I was speeding. His pull-over excuse... "I couldn't read your license plate." It is, after all, a mud covered dirt bike. I wonder if he hassles construction trucks with the same line of logic? The kid was about twenty-five, if that. As soon as he realized he wasn't rousting some sixteen year-old, the officer seemed to be extremely apologetic and in a hurry to get me on my way. Of course, the tone in my voice displayed my irritation quite clearly. He said they get a lot of stolen bikes and he just wanted to check it out. Running my tags matched my driver's license and he seemed glad to be done with the stop. I asked him repeatedly if I should produce my registration and insurance papers. No, no, no, that won't be necessary. Not worth a formal complaint, but certainly irritating and unnecessary. Perhaps I am totally missing something here, but why the f*** are you bitching about a cop doing his job, and doing something that we'd all appreciate, especially if our bike was stolen?? If there has been a rash of stolen bikes, then I think the cop did the right thing... Most of them probably don't know a KLR250 from a CR450 from a KTM300EXC, he probably had seen reports of various dirt bikes being stolen and was acting on that! Jeez, some people. I wish I had more cops that paid attention to motorcycle theft. In the city here, they could care less, a $5,000 bike isn't worth their time (and neither are the 131 unsolved homicides in 2002, but that's a different issue)... Don't punish good behavior. If your bike was stolen and it were the thief that this LEO stopped to do a look see on then your attitude towards this stop would be different. My father and brother are coming down to DC on Thursday and we're leaving on Friday for Culleoka, TN where the TransAm Trail starts. We hope to do about 1,000 miles of trail before turning around and coming back to DC. Z

Usually an officer who has "beat management" which is knowing who's who in his/her area of operations will know if you don't belong so you may be followed to ascertain you intentions. If you are stopped for "investigative reasons" be thankful he's doing his job. At least he's not loafing off somewhere, he's actually working. And as for motorcycles... alot of people on bikes run from the law... especially dirt and crotch rockets. And yes we appreciate you cleaning your plate off but crimnals do it too to blend in. There are numerous places to stash / secret weapons and contraband on bikes, additionally bikes are also high theft targets to trade for drugs or weapons so he's actually doing all of us a favor by checking to ensure all your ducks are in a row. I don't like getting pulled over either, but it happens to us all. I can't speak for all law enforcement officers but the majority are on your side. For me I hate theives! Especially when it comes to vehicles... major pet peeve! I have no problem with anyone, but if you look out of place you'll get followed and possibly stopped... my job is TO PREVENT AND SUPRESS CRIME! So give us the benfit of the doubt... we're on your side. We want the criminals not "John Q Citizen." Anyhow take it for what its worth.. if you don't like it, don't ride there.
