500mile klr checkup

Post by andrew yarnold » Tue Mar 04, 2003 7:02 am

At the moment everyone on the list is recommending doing the first service valve clearances yourself. This can be a good money saving idea later in your bike s life but no one has remember that if you don t get the dealers service stamp in the log book you lose you warranty. So for the first 2 years you've got to use an authorised Kawasaki dealer or hope nothing goes wrong with your bike. Andy: Not true. That is what the dealer *wants* you to think. If you take a look at the manual, it states that you have to have documentation on the service; notes, maybe photos, a logbook, etc. Of course, if you do the work yourself and screw up something then Kawa will not pay. Pat

Hi Pat, I don't know what the warranty is like over the pond but I've just looked at my UK warranty book and this is what it says- The warranty my not apply if the periodic maintenance and servicing is not carried out by an authorised Kawasaki Dealer as specified in the relevant owner's manual. Evidence of this servicing must be produced, etc, etc...... Andy Pat H wrote:Andy: Not true. That is what the dealer *wants* you to think. Such warranty limitations are illegal on this side of the pond. They can print them in the book (in some states -- in other states they can't even do that, which is why there is always a disclaimer about "in some states...") but they're totally unenforceable. Thor

Right Devon, the 29.5 are used by GS-Suzuki fours. Dave A12 Devon Jarvis wrote:Be careful! And bring a shim with you from your motor. The KLR uses 29mm shims, but there are 29.5mm shims around in certain bikes (I've heard) and they won't work. But they're close enough in size that you might not eyeball the difference. Pat, So have the dealer perform the service. Request (in writing) the valve clearance measurements before adjustment, the thickness and shims' positions for the shims changed, and the valve clearances after the adjustment. Then go home, remove the gas tank, etc., and the valve cover and check the valve clearances yourself. The only sophisticated tool you need to do that is a set of feeler gauges and a ratchet so you can turn the motor's crank. If the measurements you make show the dealer's adjustment to have been faked, then it is time to take the bike back to the dealer for a free valve adjustment and/or to start send photocopies of your paper trail (your original written request to the dealer, the dealer's faked clearances report, etc.) to Kawasaki's local corporate representative. -- Marc, KLR650 A12, Loveland, CO, USA Date: Tue, 4 Mar 2003 13:28:39 +0000 (GMT) From: andrew yarnold Subject: Re: Re: 500mile KLR checkup Hi Pat, I don't know what the warranty is like over the pond but I've just looked at my UK warranty book and this is what it says- The warranty my not apply if the periodic maintenance and servicing is not carried out by an authorised Kawasaki Dealer as specified in the relevant owner's manual. Jim, I'm in greenville. I did mine last week. I have the puller bolt. I used an air impact wrench and didn't need the flywheel holder (90 degree open end wrench) I found that the doohickey was fine as well as the spring, so I just left the stock spring in place and swapt in the new lever, this kept me from having to pull the inner cover. I did it the night before leaving for Daytona so I was happy to not risk tearing the second gasket. If you want to borrow the puller bolt I'd be happy to meet you 1/2 way. If you don't have a place to do it we could ride over to my uncles house in princeton and do it there.(heated garage) He has the air tools too. I used the zen lever from Fred. Orderd it on Wednesday afternoon or Thursday morning and got it the following Monday. Let me know if your interested either way. Joe S. Jim Hubbard wrote on 3/3/03 11:15 pm:
