My 1992 KLR 650 makes a whistle sound through the exhaust. I can't help but think that the thing is restricted seeing the small hole it has for the exhaust to escape through. I am looking at putting an aftermarket exhaust on my bike. Does anyone have any suggestions? Any for sale?? Thanks, Jeff

Search these archives for "tweety" and how to kill him. It involves using a hammer and long screwdriver to cut the perforations inside the muffler. I haven't done it, so don't feel qualified to offer detailed instruction. Spend your money on suspension upgrades instead.

IMHO, dont waste money on a aftermarket pipe.... Tweety is just trapped inside the pipe, he flies in there when he is young and small, then grows and cant get back out them preferations. Go to your toolbox, get 1 or 2 really long beefy screwdrivers (flat tip) and a hammer.. insert the screwdriver into the hole with the tip down and the handle up, place tip at the outter most reachable area of that preforated pipe. (There is a weld there) Grab hammer with other hand and CHISEL the snot outta it to break/spread the weld open, do this as far as you can into the pipe, and spread the seam as much as you can. Might need to crisscross the 2 screwdrivers to help spread the seam open. Once this is done, you can start you bike and blow tweety out the end of the pipe, and being a smart little birdy, he wont go back in. Hows that for cheap fix, thats remains USFS spark approved and gets just a little more tone when done. Dooden I tried a Cobra pipe, its still hanging on the garage wall, no matter how I packed it, it was just way to loud for me, bout the only thing I think it would have been nice for is to scare away deer along the highway, squeeze clutch and rev a few times, should scare everything for a few square miles... In fairness, this pipe was in need of repair, it blew the can out where it clamped to the riser pipe, I shortened the can and the inside parts to match, welded the internals together, so now its a one piece with a can that can slide a inch or two when loosened.

If you are talking about the can developing bubbles at the joint with the reverse cone that connects to the header, this is the fatal design flaw with the Cobra can. I had three Cobra cans do exactly the same thing. I will give Cobra credit in that they replaced the first two, free of charge, under warranty. Both cans were within months of the warranty running out and Cobra asked no questions and sent the replacements. But when the third one went I switched brands to the Supertrapp IDS. Its done me well and even with all twelve discs in place I think its quieter than the Cobra was. Pat G'ville, NV In a message dated 2003-03-07 5:25:55 AM Pacific Standard Time, dooden@... writes:

"Tweety" lives!!!! Kill him now! Take a big-ass screwdriver and shove it up your exhaust at an angle. Now bang on it with a hammer and rip the perforated in tube inside lengthwise about 3 or 4 times until "tweety" is no more. Much cheaper than a new exhaust. dat brooklyn bum

Didnt someone say drilling out the stock exhaust opened it up and added a few ponys? I'd like to do that. Matthew A14

The best way to get more horsepower is the XR modification. See your Honda dealer about it. ;) Z DC A5X A11X

Actually it was blown apart... Pipe was donated as a project can basically (Thanks David) Again is was just to loud for me, guess I never liked loud pipes either on bike or car.. Dooden

Hahahahahaha was thinking maybe ya bought the wrong bike if your looking to hop it up... Lets put this into perspective: 1968 VW Bettle with a Horizontal Opposed Air Cooled Engine produced 36 HP and weighed about 1800 pounds. 2002 KLR650 with a single cyclinder, water cooled engine produces 36 HP and weighs about 350 pound wet. Both make great off road machines.. Even thou the VW required alot more mods to get it there, like removing the body, building a roll cage, had to shorten the chassis, make some type of fenders, add large mud tires, make some type of header/muffler combo ect ect ect.. the KLR 650 is a happy go lucky middle of the margin bike that does nothing very well, but does everything. Of course this is my opinion and everybody has an opinion, cause they are like.... well you know the rest of it. Dooden --- In DSN_klr650@yahoogroups.com, Zachariah Mully wrote:

Opens it up, yes. More ponies, doubtful. Voids spark arrestor, likely. __Arden
