My doohickey spring was 'in place' but the end where it attaches to the case was broken off. Dan P Graham WA '00 KLR 19k mi

That was my way of thinking also, don't adjust till doohickey replacement time. My '00 model with 19 k mi on it had a broken spring when opened up two Sat's ago for the spring/dooohickey replacement. I had not adjusted it on purpose for nearly a year thinking that it was better to wait and see what was or not broken. Now after replacement and adjustment I really can tell the vibration is less. The chain did have some slack in it prior to surgery replacement. Dan P Graham WA --- In DSN_klr650@yahoogroups.com, Tengai Mark Van Horn wrote:

Sounds like a Fishing trip for you. Also sounds as if from now on, you will be a expert at the left case removal to do adjustments. Might want to replace the bolts with higher quality fasteners and keep a tube of gasket material on hand. I think some have already just removed the spring, and plan to just open the case and adjust the "doohickey" by hand to ensure it really happens. Unless of course you really want to strip the engine down to parade rest and replace half the case. (ack) Dooden --- In DSN_klr650@yahoogroups.com, "Dan Paulsen " wrote:

Hey Dan, I'm beginning to think that my spring was broken at the end (the part that I could not see). There was absolutely no tension on the lever (with the bolt loosened). I just changed my oil and filter so if a small piece did break off, I hope it came out with the oil change. The good news is that once I adjusted the lever by hand, the internal chatter that has plagued me for the last couple of hundred miles is gone. -cm p.s. - I will be ordering new parts this week to do the upgrade. p.p.s. - I originally stated that I had an A17 (wishful thinking). It is actually an A16 (2002).

This a good thing. When installing the new spring it was apparent that it is has little adjustment left (needs to be shorter) and I am concerned that it will only tension a couple times after adjustments before it will have no effect. I believe I put the Jakeman spring in but was given it by Brad so not sure who made it. Dan P Graham WA
