immediate doohickey help needed
All,
I have been hearing a rattling in my engine between 3 & 4k rpm's
(when warm) for the last 300 miles or so (I know, I'm a little slow
getting to things). My bike is a '02 with about 1500 miles on it. I
decided to take the left cover off to see if I could see any
Doohickey issues. Well, I can see the spring, still intact. I can
only see the part of the Doohickey that the adjuster bolt connects to
because I only removed the outer cover. At first, I thought
everything was fine, and was ready to put the cover back on. But
then I thought, what if the Doohickey is broken and I just can't see
it. So, with a small scredriver, I was able to rotate the Doohickey
about an eigth of an inch. It is loose!
My question is, shouldn't the Doohickey ALLWAYS have tension on it?
Or, is it possible that it can move? Please help asap as I have not
put the cover back on and I need to know if I need to order a new
(and improved) one or if I can put it back together and ride.
Thanks.

It probably needs adjustment. Loosen the bolt and see if the spring takes up the slack. If it doesn't you can adjust it by hand.

Thanks Kurt,
This was what I was wondering. The bolt was loose but the slack was still
there. This made me suspect a problem. But, if you are saying that
sometimes the spring does not take up the slack and manually moving the
doohickey is sometimes normal, then I feel better.

Sorry, I forgot to add that I had loosened the adjuster bolt. However, even if I adjust the doohickey by hand, it does not stay where I move it, it just slips back to its original position (under its own weight, not because of spring tension or anything like that). Thanks in advance for any additional insight. -cl> about an eigth of an inch. It is loose!

Well, part of the problem with the stockers is that they are easily bent or can bear an imprint from the adjuster bolt. Still, I would think with an extra set of hands you should be able to manually tension the chain and tighten the bolt. Anyway you look at it you should call Jake, Tim, Fred, or Zen and get the replacements ASAP.

Thanks for the suggestion Mark. I actually did this and just got back from a
test ride. No rattling. It seemed to work.

Hey Chris,
I don't think the spring is broken. I can still see it where it is suppossed
to be but, with the rotor in place its difficult to see much. I did what
Mark suggested and it seemed to adjust and I don't hear any more rattling.
However, I'm going to do the doohickey upgrade anyway just to be on the safe
side.
